Accelerator Pedal Range

Featured Replies

Hi. When I press the accelerator/gas pedal it feels like it reaches the full range of movement. However, if I apply a little more force I feel a click and approximately an extra 10% travel is possible.

Is is this normal and if so what purpose does it serve?

I have a 2016 2.0 dti octavia.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

It's normal.

On an automatic car, the click is when the "kickdown" feature operates - and the car drops down as many gears as possible for max acceleration.  They use the same pedal on manual cars, where the click serves no real purpose.

As above its normal on an automatic for the "kick-down" feature.

However, for me its not normal to have it on a manual (its not present on my vRS 2014) unless its something they've changed recently.

I would be suprised it it was fitted on all manual cars as it undoubtable costs more money for no real purpose.

Maybe not, the simpler logistics of only having one throttle pedal and the probability of a better price for greater volume on one pedal could very likely mean it costs less to use one pedal type on all cars.

It's noticeable on a manual in the ECO setting. But I have only used that click once myself.

This. Colleague also has a 14 plate Leon manual and noticed the same thing. VAG cost saving feature :)

I should have said - it's very much there on my 14-plate 1.4 TSI manual as well.

Kia's have the same feature too. Just there to let you know you're driving far too hard.

I drove a few manual Octavias that had it, namely with the 1.2tsi engine.

Also a Polo 1.0tsi manual that had it.

My manual VRS doesn't have it.

On a previous manual car, Clio 182, the click disabled the speed limiter function and allowed acceleration. Actually the Qashqai I'm suffering at the moment has it but in this acceleration doesn't happen anyway.

My 16 plate manual vrs has it and my last mk7 golf 1.6tdi haf it too. If in eco mode if you click it it gives all the power. When in eco mode you do not get 100% power. You get maybe 85-90%. My golf had a performance monitor and when in eco it only gave 70kw until it was clicked then it gave the full 82kw (Or there abouts, can't remember exactly). As someone else mentions, it also overides the speed limiter function.

Do they pick parts off the shelf at random? My MY16 manual 1.2 TSI does NOT have a click in the accelerator pedal movement.

I’ll experiment with the different driving modes next time I’m on the motorway to see if I notice any additional acceleration after the click. I don’t usually have my foot to the floor which is why I only noticed this ‘feature’ a couple of weeks after buying the car, so it doesn’t really make any difference to me one way or the other.

At least I know it is normal. Thanks for all the replies.
