new discs

Looking to change my rear discs and pads on my Skoda 4x4 TdF , can you change the disks without removing the carrier?

In answer to my unanswered question, the discs won't come off with the carriers in place, the old discs almost will as they are thinner, you'll need an m14 spline drive and a lot of strength. I used a car jack to move the  socket drive handle to  loosen them on the near side and my club hammer on the off side

The brakes are still very poor on this tour de France, you can't get the ABS to cut in, it's just a gradually slowing down . I'm going to change the front brakes now as they've never been any good from new

Hello from previous experience I would say that the front callipers maybe sticking / partially seized. The way that brake balancing seems to work nowadays the car will slow but not so severely to activate the ABS the pressure will be transferred to the rears hence the reason for replacement?

When you take the pads out see if the callipers move freely, on our Honda I thought only one calliper was seized as it would not easily move back,  but my local garage said that both were seized. Strangely the car would slow but you never had any confidence in the braking ability new callipers and the car's braking  feels totally different, good luck.

Is the Tour de France a 4 x 4 version ? There have been a few reports on this forum from owners with the 4 x 4 versions with brake issues as you describe.

My 2014 2wd version can stop on a sixpence (v old saying - sorry)  - Demonstrated this earlier in 2017 with a full 70-0 emergency stop on the A1 . Very impressive stopping power with ABS chattering like crazy, showed why good brakes / tyres really important.

@DEL80Y

recommended Black Diamond pads and discs for his 4x4

Yes it is, I bought it new and the brakes have never been very good, I've got another SE 2wd model and the brakes are great on that, the bloke in the motor factors commented at how big the disks are as well! Going to fit them in the next day or so and will report back

Likewise, I have the 4x4 TDF and have been underwhelmed by the braking, common theme on the 4x4 apparently.

I am looking at a Black Diamond upgrade also, I have got as far as measuring the brake discs to check the sizes, think I confirmed the sizes as 312 on the front, 282 on the back, will check again.

Still planning on new discs for the front, and pads all round.  One of the front discs has scoring so merits a change.

I have never changed discs and pads before but am pretty mechanically minded so fairly happy to give it a go having read up on it, I assume you need a caliper rewind tool ?

Any doubts and I will get it done at a garage, but interested to hear of anything to watch out for...  Also, what disks/pads are you going for @Terrytowelling ? Cheers

I've got a few caliper winding tools, LH and RH just in case, the carriers that hold the calipers in place have  spline bolts holding them on which are very tight, having done the rear with much cursing and sweating I've decided to get the garage to do it, money well spent ! My fronts have done 140 k , are scored and have a lip

Thanks terryt.... 140K is good going, mine are only about 32k but on one side the disc is scored, maybe just my luck with debris getting into the brakes perhaps.  I will probably get a quote from a local independent who are pretty good just to see whats involved, I could see me taking a whole day to fit them where a garage would 2 - 3 hours probably, as you say money well spent and I would also need to buy a rewind tool....

I would expect you will notice a big difference with those discs and a very reasonable price too...!  Is it just the rears you are doing, assume new pads as well ? Cheers

Done the rears last week , new disks and pads, these are front ones, I bought new  new front as well  pads last month

Did you notice much difference just doing the rears ?  Some folk have said just changing the rear pads has made a big difference.  Once you have done your fronts, with new brakes all round you should be stopping well !! :-)

Just changed the front discs and pads, a lot better now. The old pads had plenty of meat on them and the discs looked ok. The braking before was making a noise and the steering wheel shook

The front carriers are held on with 21 mm standard bolts

The old discs or pads weren't worn out just didn't seem to be sweeping the disc area properly as can be seen in the photo, the calipers were free and slid freely on their pins
