Oil Temperature not reading until 0ver 50c but then erratic

Featured Replies

2013 Skoda Octavia 2.0 diesel, have recently been monitoring the oil temp and noticed that when water temp is around 75 or so the oil temp eventually reads about 50. As the temp rises it seems to react very quickly but never goes above about 79. My concern is that if the sensor is reading incorrectly then incorrect info is being sent to engine management. Does anyone know the location of the temperature sensor and where can i get a new one other than rip off dealers?? Thanks in advance.

I don't know the technical details but they all start reading above 50 C, below that it just shows a dash, on both my Octavia and the wife's Polo. Also worth mentioning that the delay between the water heating up quickly to 90 C and the oil following in a slower manner owes to the thermal inertia which is different between the two. So far your experience seems normal if it wasn't for the oil temp. not getting above 79 C; mine gets to 90-100 C. Does this still apply on a longer trip, say 30-40 minutes long in non start-stop traffic?

I have had the car about 3 weeks now, second hand, I don't remember seeing it above 80 no matter what driving I am doing. I will monitor it over the coming days and weeks, got a longish run this weekend with some vicious hills thrown in so even with cool temps outside it should work its way up pretty high then. I do notice the temperature seems to be very sensitive, changing anything from 3 or 4 degrees to maybe 6 or seven very quickly, I always thought these things changed slowly!! don't know yet about the stop/start, only started monitoring yesterday, will post again after the weekend with some more information.

Thanks for your reply!!

2015 2.0TDI hatchback here; 17 mile run back and fore to work, mixture of A roads and dual carriageways.

Winter (-5 to say +5C) oil is usually in the region of 70-85C.

Rest of the year on the same run oil is in the area of 90-100C.

Depends on the time of day this year too; morning run if it has been frost overnight being lower oil temp than driving home.

Here is an example on the Polo this morning. However, 10 minutes later they were both at 90 C.

I agree with the others comments.

The display does not show oïl temperature below 50°C, until it reaches 50 you will see dashes.

On my vRS I have the same behaviour as BNT1985, in the winter it takes longer for the oïl temperature to increase.

... and it's possible it goes back down again when the thermostat opens if it's really cold :)

Saw mine drop from 65 to 50 on the motorway at -10C ambient... and then go back up.

Sounds normal behaviour. On a cold day on A roads after the coolant warmed up I switched on the heater blower.  The oil temperature started to reduce a few degrees. Diesels don't produce a lot of waste heat.

The Octavia 3 has several thermostats according to dealer. You may notice the engine coolant temp warming up then dropping back down before 90C is reached. A  thermostat is opening to heat up the coolant providing heat to the blowers before the thermostat that allows coolant to travel to the radiator. It is also an intelligent system and depends on whether you have the blowers to provide  cabin heat on high or low. You might not notice the coolant temp falling if cabin heat is on high just a steadier engine coolant temp  rise

I agree this is totally normal behaviour, My 2014 2.0 TDI VRS runs a lot cooler in the winter with the heaters on,

Winter (-5 to say +5C) oil is usually in the region of 70-85C.

Rest of the year on the same run oil is in the area of 90-100C.
