Superb Newbie - a few questions about odd things

Featured Replies

I'm totally thrilled with my new sportline 280...

but i do have a few questions - i'm happy to be told "known problem" or "there is a thread for that" - but I noticed a few quirks so far, and wondered if it was just me:

1) the navigation system seems to lose its memory of the fact that "google maps" option is ticked, and sometimes just comes up with plain maps; haven't quite worked out exactly when yet, but is this a known "feature"? (or is it to do with mobile reception?)
2) When the car has been in ECO mode and stopped, and then started up again, the screen display shows ECO mode selection, but the "maxidot" displays shows "D", not "E", and indeed, the car behaves as if in a regular mode that doesn't do coasting..   i have to manually re-select ECO mode to activate it.

3) I can't get media command to connect, and it's possible i didn't order that, but neither will any of the other skoda apps connect. Do they all rely on media command, and is that something can be enabled in VCDS - or is it dealer only. And should I be able to get the other skoda apps to work anyway?  (the online portal thing that stores trips etc. is working fine)

still trying to get to terms with the whole automatic parking brake  :-)

Thanks for reading,

nik

The same happens for S (Sport mode) for the drive mode - it will revert to D next time you start. For drive mode E it does what you say in ECO and Individual when drive is set to ECO. None of us has figured a way around it. My last car was an Audi with the same engine and gearbox and it did remember this setting so it has nothing to do with them or the MQB platform the two cars use. Skoda has decided to do it this way.

Have you setup a WiFi hotspot in the car? The phone and Columbus infotainment system need to be on the same WiFi.

Thanks for taking the trouble to answer. So, the gear thing is a general mystery.. Strange.. and yet it doesn't do it in the Octy either..

Re the connected apps - I have indeed set up the hotspot, and that's working for general internet access (kid can get online; car can access online POIs etc), but to be fair I haven't read the manual :) re the other apps.. I did notice, however, that the skoda "OneApp" crashes when run on my phone, so that might be one associated problem.

as far as media command goes, some error box pops up on the car and disappears, but I videoed it, and it says something about not being activated or enabled... but having checked my order, it should be - I guess I'll have to follow that up, unless it can be done in VCDS anyway (though I thought I read somewhere it needed some kind of license key from the dealer)

Hi, just to say that I came across this reselect of D in the manual... Apparently that's how it has been designed to work. It's bizarre to me. Why let you individually set car parameters only to have to set them again each time. Interestingly, the car thinks it's in Individual for example but the drive mode isn't set to Eco if that's what's chosen, as you clearly already know.

And this is not how it worked on my Audi A3 1.4TFSI S-Line which remembered the drive mode as E across car restarts. It too is based on the VW group MQB platform like the Golf, A3, Octavia, Tiguan, Ateca, Leon, etc.

But I'm not confinced drive mode E saves much (any) fuel.

And lets not forget the same applies to Sport mode. Select sport mode and drive reverts to D after you restart.

I think it mitigates against a heavy right foot so you have to press the pedal further to use more fuel. Also, you have to change your driving style to predict earlier when to lift and coast. I kinda got used to this because I've come from an E-Class hybrid... The difference is that the DSG properly coasts so can maintain speed better. If you use adaptive cruise it doesn't coast at all and pretty much all the benefit is gone.

But adaptive cruise might benefit from 2-cylinder mode in ACT cars.

I've set my car up to Eco in the individual mode under my name to my key and it always selects Eco when I start and E appears on Maxidot, so I assume you should be able to do the same?

No

same on 2016 week 8

I asked at the dealer yesterday if the key could be programmed to do this. How did you do it?

Are you saying that in yours the gearbox always comes on saying E1 instead of D1 as well in the Maxidot display. My car remembers the last drive mode but the gearbox always chooses D instead E even though the individual is set to Eco for drive.

E on Maxidot and coasting too

I've not done anything with keys specifically - but if I leave my car in ECO mode, or individual (where I have set up ECO), when it starts up ECO (or individual) is what it starts up in, but D appears in the maxidot and it won't coast.  I have to reselect the mode (which already shows as selected)  :-/

not sure what week build mine is, but it was delivered to port xmas week..

Mine was registered in October 2016 and I bought it in July 2017, so I'm not sure exactly when it was built,   Mine starts in Eco, E appears on Maxidot and it coasts, so I can only assume the specification has changed since mine was built?

More likely the group of novice programmers that broke the xenon start up procedure have been meddling.

Penpusher, if you get chance could you have a look in the manual on the mode selection page and see if yours has the notice that I posted saying this was now the standard behaviour?

Legfitter, I think this is the relevant paragraph that I have in the manual applicable to my car:-

If the mode Sport or Individual was set prior to the engine being switched off (Drive - Sport), the drive changes to Normal mode after the engine is started. In order to switch back to Sport, select mode Sport or Individual or set the selector lever of the automatic transmission to mode S.

I had a demo car earlier this year (220PS SE L Executive DSG) and that would remember the gearbox setting after restarting. I can only surmise that sometime during 2017 this behaviour was changed for some reason.

In local driving, when I had to do the exact same trip many times (hospital visits) at similar quiet times in the A3 1.4TSI DSG car I found the best MPG was achieved in manual mode making it drive in higher gears. But not enough difference to want to drive in manual mode all the time.

My Superb was build week 38 in 2017.

With regards to 2)

Mine does the same (2017 Diesel 190), reverts to normal driving more (Shows D). If you use the gear selector to go into sport then pull it back again, it goes into eco (E) again.

I've also noticed that the infotainment will display (E) when the maxidot displays (D) so it may well remain in eco despite what the maxi dot says?...

In short, I think its just trying to be too clever BUT I have to say that eco mode does seem to work (watch your live MPG); in eco it shifts up at much lower revs, the throttle response is noticeably duller (almost sluggish) and I've even noticed tonight (doing about 35-40) that even with your foot off the pedal it pulls along in 6th at about 850 rpm to maintain a constant speed on what is essentially tick over... all things that should help the bigger picture of economy.

Well mine doesn't but then the infotainment is referring to drive mode and not gearbox setting that maxi-dot is showing.

Will try the switch to manual and back tomorrow if I remember.

I still find it funny that anyone will set a car to eco mode and make the car sluggish. Why did people spend thousands of pounds on a car and then ruin the experience to save a couple of pounds?

Not everyone buys a car for performance alone.

Extending your argument, why did you buy the 1.4 when for a few pounds more you could have had the faster 220 or 280?

The superb is really made to carry passengers in a decent level of comfort.  Generally, driving like you are doing hot lap of the Nürburgring won't make you popular and may cause vomiting.  I generally have the car in normal when I am on my own, occasional use of manual/sport for roundabouts etc.  When we are 4 up, Eco mode as I find it smoother.  Perhaps it should C for Chauffeur mode.

just Waze saves me from penalties :)
but in winter and wet summer day i prefere E as main mode
and only sometime put to S by DSG gear stick, for braking by engine or take busy line from standing start

maybe with 1.4 you need full performance all the time,
but with 2.0 it most time enough :)

I bought the 1.4 because, having driven it, I found it to have enough performance for me.

As far as using the full performance all the time, I doubt that I use a quarter of the performance most of the time.

There may be a few roads in Scotland that you can really get going but down here in the south it's so congested that using full performance would probably result in a nasty accident.
