Need help with parts and problems.

Featured Replies

Hey guys. Just bought a 2000 mk1 1.4mpi comfort. 68bhp. Few wee issues with it I thought you guys might be able to help with. First of all the boot release won't work from the boot itself, I have to use the handle inside the car. Any ideas what it could be? Second, its neen modified with a sports filter but to do that the guy cut the original filter box so i need to sourse a new air filter box and filter, one without the air flow meter. Any ideas where to look. Also it has a massive exhaust which is far too loud and I would love to replace it with an original exhaust. I'm only getting 20-28 mpg going by the trip computer so I hope changing these things will help with that lol. Any ideas where to get an exhaust.  I'm in N.ireland.

Exhaust from a Tyre & Exhaust Fitter, or a Motor Factor if you are fitting.

Air Box from a Wanted ad on Briskoda Forum maybe, or Ebay.

The 8 valve 1.4 MPI isn't all that economical at the best of times because the design of the engine goes back to the 1960s. I find mine pretty good on a long motorway run, though.

Regarding the boot not opening from the outside handle - does the lights-on bleeper work when you open the driver's door with sidelights on?

I don't have a remote for it only one key came with it. Inside lights work in general so I don't think it's the fuse.

Whats your mpg like round town TMB

You need to check if the lights-on warning bleep works because there is a microswitch in the door which commonly fails and this affects the boot opening too. If the bleep doesn't work it points to a faulty microswitch which is inside the door on the lock unit.

Completely new to driving mate, first car so I don't know what I'm looking or listening for. Do you mean I should hear a beep if I leave my side lights on and open the door to exit? If so I don't think it does as I've left the lights on a few times now.

Yes that's exactly it.

If there is no bleep with the lights on and driver's door open it points to a failed microswitch inside the door, which is a common problem across a lot of VAG cars. The car will behave strangley too - it will relock itself after 30 seconds after being opened even with the driver's door open because the microswitch is also used to tell the electronics that  a door is open and when the switch has failed it can't do that.

Try opening a back door and see if the boot will open from outside then.

No mate, no luck. Back door open and still no luck with the boot. But no beep when when I leave the lights and open the door.

If it's not bleeping, the microswitch will have failed. You might have a separate problem with the boot - switch in the handle, dodgy solenoid, broken wire etc.

Boot opening solenoid/servo motor is under the trim panel in the boot.

Cheers mate, I'll have a look at both those.

@Zzz101z - The "Lights on" bleep is quite loud; similar to the chimes that sound if you switch the ignition on without fastening your seat belt first.

I think you'll find that's silence on a Mk1 Fabia.
