Kumho tyres damage to tyre wall

Featured Replies

Is that tyre damage anything to be concerned about?

Tyres are 1.5 years old and only have 13k on them. It's the front left side. Been over some nasty pot holes lately. :(

The AA recommend that any damage to the sidewall resulting in bulging or tears mean the tyre is not safe and should be replaced.

Yes looks quite serious damage - it is a big weakness on ultra low profile tyres - they do not cope well with potholes etc.

I have friends who have had complete tyre failure on these sort of tyres owing to hitting potholes/road damage.

Personally I stick to 16'' wheels for that reason - our roads are now in a deplorable state,I do not do any night driving now unless I really have to - at least in daylight one has a sporting chance of avoiding potholes.

In some areas up here we end up doing an almost constant slalom through road defects LOL

Have you had the wheel off and looked at the other sidewall?

Don't risk using a damaged tyre anyway.

YS53,

if you fancy 17" in the Summer i have 4 Black Gigaro with 205/40 R 17's tyres on,

and 2 are nice strong tyres for the front that will stand up well to Perth roads.

Much Cheapness.

I'd not be going on the motorway with that tyre myself.

Replace - Immediately!

Do I replace all?

Could just get 2 new Kumho Ecsta PS71 fitted for £130

I can get 4 Bridgestone Potenza for £366 fitted.

4 X Goodyear Eagle F1 for £383

Just replace 2 in you need to.

Bridgestone Potenza are sh!te IMO.  But then so are Kumho Ecsta.      Have you not had lots of flashing TC light?

Agree with AwaoffSki re Bridgestone.

Yes, TC flashes every time I drive, although it is wet and slippery this time of year.

Maybe 2 Goodyear's then

Avon ZZ5 any good? They £70 each

Avon good,  Goodyear good.

& what some say are Ditch Finders i use,

TIGAR Syneris Tyres from ATS Euromaster, about £110 a pair fitted.

XL Sidewalls, correct speed /load rating. Last well, grip well, much better than reviews say.

(Made in Serbia by the Company in the factory owned by Michelin.)

Thanks for the offer Offski but I think I will stick to our 16'' wheels :)

Our 02 Polo is even betterrer - it has 15'' wheels B)

I like the Bridgestone, great grip and turn-in. Then again, it doesn't rain much around here, so I prioritise dry grip over wet, and maybe they're not as good in those conditions.

Yes an OK Summer / Warm weather tyre, even a dry track day tyre.

But then that is not much cope as an everyday UK tyre, or All Year Round fitment.

I hope the rim isn't damaged inside.

I've ordered 2 Goodyears

Used those on my fabia for 2 years and rate them highly

I see people do damage like this by scraping kerbs or by carrying on driving slowly on a flat tyre, killing it rather then stopping, inflating and driving to tyre shop.

I like the Potenzas as well - and I live somewhere a little wetter!

Certainly far better than the Dun(p)lops that came with the vRS - traction light flashing up was a regular occurrence - think I’ve only managed it once or twice in the Polo.

Are those new discs recently as well?

  • Author

No, just the originals.

New tyres are awesome.

I think the torque steer is greater somehow

?

A 2013 car?

Do you really think those discs have been on for 5 years.  Damn good if they have been.

  • Author

Yes, I think they are original. It's only done 44k.
