Ski hatch handle - its come off!

Recommended Posts

Andy I have been lucky it seems, I was told to approach skoda UK and given a number by my local dealer, I explained the situation and said about the multiple cases on Briskoda, a few days later I got a call saying that it would be covered at no cost to me, it's a shame that that isn't the default response but a good outcome all the same, I hope you have the same outcome as it's clearly a fault on some cars, the flap on our 2014 octavia looks almost identical and now I'm scared to even touch it !

I recently bought a second hand 18 plate Superb and never even thought to look at the Ski Hatch when collecting the car.  Lo and behold a few weeks later I went to open the ski hatch and realised the handle had been completely broken off (presumably by the previous owner).  I've contacted Skoda customer car to see what my chances are in terms of having the ski hatch replaced under warranty, I've also provided them a link this specific thread as evidence that this seems to be a fairly common issue with the car.

Did you but it from Rainworth?

No I actually bought the car from Cazoo and had it delivered to my home.  Checked over the car (clearly not thoroughly enough) and was aware of the fact the magnetic detachable boot light was missing which, to be fair to Cazoo, they acknowledged and gave me an Amazon voucher to cover.  It just never even occurred to me to check the ski hatch handle at the time.  With the boot being so large and deep, it really is a pain having to almost climb into the boot in order to open the ski hatch.  If I'm not eligible to have the hatch replaced under warranty, I may need to just bite the bullet and pay out of my own pocket to have it replaced.

Just discovered this thread after opening my ski hatch for the first time and removing the handle accidentally. 2017 Superb estate that I’ve got on PCP. Had it just over 2 years so now out of extended warranty. I’ve got a few scuffs on paintwork and scrapes on alloys which I had planned on having touched up before giving it back but now I’m thinking I will have to get this repaired too.

Once the clips for the handle fall off are they gone for good or can they be refitted?

Will get the screwdrivers out this weekend and see if I can take it apart at least.

I’ve just picked yup my ‘67 plate L&K today and have realised the ski hatch is broken, reading this thread it seems like a very common problem!

any ideas if it’s user serviceable and if so where you can get the replacement parts from?

it’s only a minor issue, but keen to have things as they should be. I noticed mine is also missing both umbrellas, but only realised when I’d got the car home😔

I keep meaning to got some time out in mine and see if I can take it apart.

with the umbrellas I would go back to the dealer and ask for them. They took some out of one in the showroom for mine. Very handy to have. Check the ice scraper under the fuel flap too. Just wish I had asked for a spare wheel!

Ahh ok, I'll try and take a look tomorrow, but comments suggest it looks like a sealed unit so we'll how I get on.

I've actually purchased the car through a relatively new firm called 'Carsa' the car was apparently prepped in Southampton, and was moved up for me to view & test drive. I'll certainly ask to check if they were removed during 'prep and then not returned to the vehicle.

The company has advised me the umbrellas weren’t present when they received the vehicle but have ordered me some to replace the missing ones, and should arrive tomorrow.

They’ve also said they will cover the cost of getting the ski hatch repaired, but asked if I know a local Skoda specialist that could do the work as they don’t want to pay dealership price to put it right.

The Question is, do any of you lovely lot know of any said Skoda specialists in the East Midlands?

p.s sorry for resurrection of an old thread!

Any one able to advise?

Considering this seems like a common fault when the post was originally opened, I would have expected this to be quite a common discussion?

I too recently broke the ski hatch handle on a 17 estate. First time I tried to open it just to see what was on the other side, still don't know. I have told my wife yet....what should i do??

I've been able to speak to the local Skoda Dealership and they have advised that the handle assy for ski hatch is £130.18 inc vat, this is reference 17 on the screenshot attached. What I'm unsure of is if I can split the original part 17  from 14,15 & 16.

Has anyone had any success with this?

Bit of an update on this,

The company I purchased the vehicle from agreed to source the replacement part above at their cost, and arranged to ship it to me. The part in question arrived today. It is exactly the same as the one I'm replacing, except the new one doesn't have the felt pads on, I'll look to grab the Mrs hair dryer and attempt to transfer to the new part.

The old one & the new one, the new one with the handle still attached (hopefully they're addressed the assembly issue)

I've been able to transfer the upholstered armrest from the old hatch to the new, it was being held in place by two retaining screws. However I'm struggling to remove the other upholstered part of the armrest. I've attempted pressing two retaining clips, but it still wont budge!

I’ve been able to successfully remove the bottom upholstered section of the armrest, it’s not bonded on as suggests by the part department, but is held on by several retaining clips. I did actually break one whilst trying to remove, but it doesn’t eeem to have any impact on it staying attached to the new part.

My fingers and thumbs are sore as hell from trying to prise the plastic apart. But at least I’ve been able to transfer everything over. Just need to bolt it back in place.

Just managed to fix it! If you can shake out the small clip from the bottom of the arm rest you are half way there. They push fit from the inside. I fed a small but stout piece of wire through the hole for the clip and out the bottom of the arm rest. Put a small 90 degree bend on the end and feed it through the hole in the clip to secure it. (Make sure you feed it on the right way round!  Then use the wire to pull the clip up into the hole. Twist 90 degrees to release the clip. Only problem is you have to hold the handle in place and put the clip in place. So I had to drill few a small holes in the hand end to be able to pull the clip into place straight on with the handle in situ.

all now sorted with a tiny hole under the handle to show for it.

frustrating, awkward, difficult, but not impossible!

safe to say I won’t be using the internal handle again just in case! But at least it’s back in place properly!

Three years late to the party, and not a Superb (but I suspect it's a part common to both Superb and Octavia). Had this same issue, took it into the dealership (Marshall in Nottingham in this case) as requested following a quick phone call. Parts guy took a quick look... 'oh yeah, fine' - booked in for a few weeks' time for a warranty repair. Fingers crossed. I took my armrest assembly out to take a look at it (shh, don't tell!) - the whole thing is just held in with two T30 Torx bolts.

It's my turn today! Black series currently with my Mk3. 😬

I don't understand, I pulled with normal strength... But handle falled on the back seat. I've also found a small spring.

What surprises me is that nothing looks broken.

I didn't have time to take a close look, but I've seen a small hook and the handle, where I suppose the spring should be connected to. But on the backrest, I don't understand where spring has to be attached. I can post pics if necessary.

Hi,

As promised, here is the way I solved my problem.

To make it easier, you need to unscrew the complete armrest. For that, open the ski hatch and fold it down. 2 torx screws are located at the bottom and fixed to the back rest.

Once armrest is removed, then unscrew the leather part. 2 other torx screws are located on each side, somehow on the pivoting axle.

Then you need to remove the carpet covering on the back of the ski hatch to access 4 inner hooks. I used a heat gun set at 120°C to unglue the carpet covering.

You have to unlock several small hooks all around the armrest. But the closer to the front of the armrest you get, the harder it is.

To make it easier, you need to unlock the 2 inner hooks at the bottom of the armrest. But, they're quite hard to unlock. For each of them, you have to press some sort of tab to be able to unlatch the hooks.

See below, the tab in the lower rectangle and the hooks in the upper rectangle.

IMG-8244.jpg

Then do the same with both inner hooks at the front of the armrest.

But, honestly, it's a mess! I've had cold sweat not to break both shells. It took me more than 2 hours to have enough access.

Once the arm rest is enough opened (if not totally) , you can get back the banana-shaped missing lug:

IMG-8183.jpg

Put the handle back in place and then put the lug back in place too (blue rectangle below). Then attach the spring with one hook on the shell (yellow rectangle below),

and the other one on the handle (red rectangle below):

IMG-8246.jpg

Note: I had to "close" hooks at each end of the spring with pliers, to be sure it remains "attached" to the shell and the handle.

Finally, I "glued" both lugs with black car and boat putty.

Then you just have to clip both shells, which takes... less than 20s.

As I unfortunately broke few small hooks around the edge, I used black car and boat putty agains to get a nice finish at both shells junction.

Now that's done, you can put the covering carpet back in place, using an iron tor make the glue "melt" into the carpet. No worry, if the carpet gets a bit "polished" and shiny. You get its original appearance just by scratching the carpet with a cutter blade.

Then just reassemble the armrest back into the car. That's it! :)
