How do I turn off this bloody awful fake engine noise?

Featured Replies

So in normal and sport my 245 sounds like a V8 from inside and nothing special outside.

Anyone any idea how on earth I switch off the obsurd fake engine noise permanently (rather than only in individual)?

Cheers!

Unplug it or turn it off using VCDS/OBDeleven.

Above post nails it. Or run in eco where it's much quieter. Or in individual mode with sound set to eco.

I don't get why anyone would want this even as an option, let alone as something you cant turn off - and not aiming this at skoda, but all the brands who 'synthesis' engine noise.

Just seems to say 'hey your car sounds so crap, we had to make it sound better to feed your ego and not make you feel bad'.

Next they will be putting speakers on the outside so passer by's can also indulge in the sound of a V8 coming from a corsa.

I agree but some people on here really really like it.  No doubt they will be along in a bit.

;)

Look forward to hearing their reasoning as to why they want their 4 pot turbo to sound like a V8!

I wonder if its because if you squint REALLY hard the VRs badge looks like it says V8s?

I find it OK in normal mode, not too loud & at least gives you some engine sound. However I do think its to OTT in vRS mode & sounds silly especially when the engine sounds good anyway from the outside.

As mentioned above is just put the car in Individual setting & then adjust the sounds onto eco while leaving all the other setting in the sport setting

I like it too. Can’t turn mine down though (2014 car).

When I collected my VRS from the dealer brand new, it lasted 3.5 miles (the drive home) before I got under the scuttle panel and disconnected it and that's the way it has stayed.

It's got to be the most irritating sound out there, very reminiscent of early video games.

I like it. Do I even need a reason? I do agree it should be an easy turn off option though.

I'm with @scottyc I wouldn't say I love it but I don't mind it - its a reminder not to gun it too hard while the car is less than a week old.

I feel like i have to apologise to my petrol head friends because of a fake engine noise like a child's toy. Disabling it is in my to do list.

I like it. But then again mine is the diesel so anything that makes it sound less like a diesel is a bonus.

It shouldn't be needed on the 245 though, that should be all exhaust!!

All too common now.

Even some BMW high performance 6 cylinder models play fake engine noise through the speakers.

Have a search for BMW Sound Symposer.

I don't mind it but my 5 year old loves it, which works for me because I don't have to rev a new car for him to feel like we're going fast!

That said it should be easy to turn off, goodness only knows why they don't this an option.

Does anyone know where in VCDS I’d find the option to turn it off, or at least down by a large margin?    Cheers!

A9 is the Soundaktor module. You can turn the volume to 0 there :)

Even Porsche and the mighty BMW M5 use a similar technology.  Unfortunately emissions regs/engine downsizing means manufacturers have to synthesise engine noises.   Ford had a nightmare getting a throaty note out of the Volvo T5 engine so fitted a symphoser as well as some trick manifold.

My mates BiTDI 3.0 A6 has an active speaker in the exhaust.  He bought a plugin box from Germany which allows him to change the exhaust note to whatever he feels.  Audi HQ in MK had an SQ5's active exhaust speaker playing music in the foyer according to the people I was speaking to on a promotional RS open day.

Yep... no arguing there - engine regs have killed engine noise for all main stream manufacturers, never again will we hear an engine like the C63 AMG V8 - thats a beast of a sound!

Music from your exhaust sounds very 'Pimp My Ride' territory :)

How much of a job is that to do?

Oh the sound from the exhaust is just lovely from the outside :)

Sounds pretty silent to me? What the car needs is a decent exhaust! (and intake, they're both damn near silent)

I'm in agreement with most, the noise is horribly fake and I just switch it off in individual and set everything else to sport. I fail  to see the point in the fake noise, (or even normal mode) just individual for me, or eco if I'm sat in town.

Manufacturers could just fit an active exhaust valve in more models so we get the best of both world, but I guess fakeness is cheaper!

Hmmm,

Maybe I need to rev it harder once its run in. Still won't sound like a full engine back 2.5" stainless system though!
