Review VRS topgear

Featured Replies

This is exactly why I maintain that Top Gear should stick to the telly, and Car magazine is the finest motoring magazine in the world.

Car's summary of the new vRS was something like

"Better than a Golf GTI. There now, that didn't hurt too much, did it?"

Skoda's image is only a problem for stupid people who have awoken from a hybernation period which commenced in about 1994.

Not the view "OF" the back' date=' but "OUT" the back. You cant see f**k all.

No one will be close enough to pass anyway, so i'm not too fussed.

Hey John, he would soon change his mind if he had a go of my legendary "350 bhp" Fabia.  [/quote']

This is true...you miss vital things such as flashing headlights....indicators....:rofl:

Steady on now, you can't be talking about the great messiah himself JC?, the worlds greatest motoring journalist is not a ****** (whatever that is!). Oh, and by the way the Merc SL went ages ago, think you'll find him trundling around the Cotswolds in a Ford GT. All hail Jeremy Clarkson :P

That was the most random review of a car that I have ever read. Almost every statement made is contradicted somewhere else (often in the very next paragraph) Was this review written solely written by one person or were the voices telling him what to write :nut: :pillepall

I think the reviewer needs a good kicking to bring hime to his senses :nutkick: (finally found a use for this smiley  )

This review is in stark contrast to the review of the Mk1 Octy vRS which TG seemed to like

It was rather poor, it seems that it's a test drive that he did not want to do. Or maybe is just had writers block?

I never read too much into test drives write ups, I'd rather note the points and check them for myself.

It all comes down to the reviewers opinion at the time, which is the problem with 90% of journalism these days. Minor details like facts are often left by the road side whereas sensationalism will, seemingly, always make for a more enjoyable read. You only need to pick up any 'paper these days to see that.

As for me, I always take all reviews with a pinch of salt, be the subject matter motoring, football or the daily news. I always realise that I'm looking at one persons opinion on something, as opposed to a truely balanced view, which is why I took the vRS out for a test drive before I ordered one (arriving tomorrow). And yes, I am very excited about picking it up at 9:30 ;-)

I do get it a bit peeved in this age of everyone having too much credit.

Reason? Everyone and his dog has mercs etc.It is very hard to say anything is prestige and harp on about'budget'.

All cars are not far off as good as each other.'Budget' make speak has gone out of the window.Journalists should talk about cars that are 'bad taste'.Top Gear were keen to say that abut the new 3 series on telly:rolleyes: (saying choose the mondeo instead:D )

Seems like a fairly positive review, all-in, although not very well-written in a strange, by-numbers kind of way.

It doesn't bother me, I just have the smug satisfaction that i actually OWN my own car and that I enjoy owning it!

This whole article says absolutely NOTHING about the car. No data, parameters, EXPERIENCES about the behaviour of car, etc. Only general statements. I think, this guy read technical specs, looked at the 3 pictures and wrote this pieces of **** in 15 minutes.

Not even taking the keys in his hands...

Mk1 RS cars used by hungarian police as highway catch cars, this must tell something... I'm sure mk2 RS is surely not worse than its ancestor in any means.

I agree with what he said to an extent.

I am a fan of Skoda, but at the end of the day, it is a budget brand. I popped into the VW showroom today to find out the price of a 4-door Golf GTi 2006 with all the options....it's cheaper than the Octavia vRS MKii by 5,000 dhs. I would have the GTi over the Octi vRS anyday at a price point which is +5%/-5% the average. The GTi looks better, handles better and it is the owner of the turbo'd engine that sits in the Octavia.

Mind you, I love Skodas, and I think they make great looking & performing cars, but if Skoda actually have the balls to hit the price range of a VW, they're only being foolish in my opinion.

Here a 2006 GTi with the same spec as an Octy II vRS is about

Calm down.... Do you really care that much what it says?

Don't you think in any case it is what the car feels like to a particular driver that matters? The way they test 0-60 [etc] would shred up most cars in a few weeks if driven like that, and nearly everything from the local bread van up can cruise far faster than anyone can use in the UK without being locked up.

Anyone who can and does regularly corner on the limit of handling probably needs a sedative.

When I test drove even my cooking 2.0 it just felt so good, plenty of equipment, plenty of space - that's what sold it to me, plus the known qualities of build, value and reliabilty and so on. The bottom line is these Skodas feel so good to drive.

110 % correct so why have I ordered a fabia vRS and not a 1.2?????????

Why does anyone pay group xx insurance instead of group y? When it comes to ordering a new Octy for the wife does my heart say vRS but head say L&K deisel?

The same reason I bought a 2.0FSI not a lower powered car. Because it is nice to have the zip in the gears and cruise, corner, and brake miles inside its limits. But that is a lot different from trying to use it flat out. For any given performance, a higher spec car is always going to be best because it is nowhere near its possible limits. Remember the old basic Mini? Top speed about 74 and everyone drove it at 73 !!

Ah but the old mini would get to 30 mph quicker than most and would corner better than most modern cars as well. I wouldn't think that the brakeing or handling on a 2.0 elegance would be different from a 1.6 classic, certainly not cruising at a legal limit, or cornering sensibly, the main arguement is for overtaking abilty, but if you want to overtake desn't that make you impatient?

You see you have allready blown your arguement in the same way that I blew the argument when I ordered the vRS, if we are honest we are addicted to speed and 1 upmanship. (before anyone asks about 1 upmanship in a skoda, I would like to bet if you researched the companies history in depth there are few marques to touch it in terms of technological advancement, diversity or competitive pedigree)

I'll admit I like that feeling of passing a knot of middle lane bumblers in such a quick squirt that you wonder where they all went - I guess a Ferrari owner feels the same but more so! But I'm not sure about the ultimate performance argument [for me personally I mean] because one reason I traded in the Mk 1 Octy vRS was that I had all this performance under my foot and used a fraction of it. I think we all have the level at which we are happy and maybe that changes with age!! When I was about 27 I had a 3 litre Superspeed Escort whose 0-90 was better than the current E type Jag ! But now? Fetch my slippers Ethel.

I actually think the guy was confused himself, he felt a range of emotions about the car, and expressed himself accordingly.

Whether it is from previous decades or not, many people including those who perhaps should know better, think of Skoda as a budget brand, and in terms of price (a poor measure) it is. For the money Skoda cars are very good, but they are getting dearer and offering better specs so it is natural that journalists compare to the other members of the VAG group/'premium brands'.

For many people given a choice of a Skoda or an Audi/BMW/VW etc they would not buy the Skoda IF they were the same price, or close.

The badge issue still exists. The journalist, I feel is caught in the 'mixed emotions' conflict about high end Skodas

But not for me, so I have my Skoda.

I think the point he's making is the car is, as he said, "nothing more than a fairly quick family car" so what's with the boot spoiler, the green calipers and the go-faster seats?

I thought it would be a car I loved, and it could be a great car, but what spoils it for me is the tacky pretensiousness.

For contrast look at how Volvo do it with the much faster V50 T5. Just because it's got the go-faster engine they don't feel the need to give it the go-faster stripes as do Skoda. It's fast, but stays a grown-up executive car. Look at how Audi do it with their warm saloons and estates. No funny seats needed.

Skoda almost seem to have an inferiorty complex as if no one would think it nippy motor without the tarting up. So they end up messing up the basic very staid but ok design by adding incongruous boy racer bits from Halfords. It's that contrast that grates for me. It's like seeing your grand-dad with blonde streaked dyed hair and gel. Trying too hard doesn't work.

For me, I'd rather have an honest Ambiente or Elegance without the dopey spoiler, seats, and green painted bits but with the important bit which is the turbo. As it is I'd find the vRS despite all its obvious virtues much too embarrassing to be seen in.

In the end the only review that matters is the one by the customer who gets his cheque-book out - or in my case walks away. Sorry Skoda.

Interesting that. When I had my Mk1 vRS the wife always commented on how tacky the green calipers looked - and she really is not a car nut of any kind!

To not buy a car because of the colour of the brake calipers WTF, am I missing something cos I don't recall seeing go faster stripes either.I would hardly say the vRS looks like its driven through a Halfords shop window, no Gold wheels, No neon lighting, no whale tail IMO the seats and silver trim lift an othewise dark cabin, each to their own, but hardly embarrasing or trying too hard. The car is being sold as a sport model not an exec so a spoiler is derigour, the L & k is an exec model with elec black leather seats etc which would be a fairer comparison to Volvo et al.

An equivalent spec Volvo T5 or Audi will set you back around
