Review VRS topgear

Featured Replies

The message I see given out by someone driving an Octavia Elegance is "I bought this car because it's a well-engineered machine that does what I need well. I didn't buy it to impress you or the neighbours".

The message from the vRS is: "I'm desperate to impress but hard-up or a tight-wad. Can't afford a real performance car but did you notice the green paint and the spoiler?"

As the journo said: "There's something quite embarrassing about high-end versions of low-end cars." If it doesn't embarrass you then don't worry about it. :)

Agree too. Edit..with the others

Every single car manufacturer who produces a sport model adds the famous three S's.......Seats....Spoiler......SchWheels:) why pick on Skoda?

Tacky is buying a Range Rover or Mercedes with a 'Khan Ulti tosh kit' or whatever that stuff is:D

Yep, there'll always be a market for the "sports model". Reminds me a lot of the Morris Marina GT et al.

Why not just make the turbo an option for the standard models as in the Audis without all the silly stuff and pretending to be a rally car?

Sorry, not to my taste.

Hard for me to comment on your postings as Iv'e actually bought one but I think you are out on a limb with this one buddy!. :thumbdwn:

Each to their own on taste re:interiors etc BUT the Octy RS is not just spoilers, seats and a turbo - it actually has different suspension etc and handles better than an Ambiente / Elegance. Have you ever driven one?

Hoisted by your own pitard sir! Your elegance in this arguement becomes a low-end variant of a low end car. But then the message I get by your posting is that you admit the quality of Skoda, hope the neighbours don't notice what it is and if they do you will claim its really an Audi and you saved

Yep, obviously hard to comment if you've bought one. I see the problem. :)

I'm in the more objective position of having intended to buy one until I saw and road-tested one.

More seriously, I was disappointed. If they would put the turbo in one of the high-spec models (i.e. one where leccy rear windows are standard) without all the embarrassing stuff I'd still consider one provided there was less road noise than the vRS I tried.

Just out of interset you aren't a writer for a certain publication are you?

Just out of interset Pat, you haven't bought one of those cars mentioned in the review you object to have you? ;)

(To clarify for you, I'd be quite happy to be seen in an unpretentious standard Octy; I would be embarrassed to be seen in the very silly and pretentious tarted up vRS version, especially by drivers of real performance cars.)

No, Fabia vRS and a Mk 1 L&K, and not embarrassed by either, nor the previous felicia, favorits et al, even when they came with lurid green and spoilers on the back, for a 1.3 with a top speed of 94mph:rofl: Then on the otherhand as I used to point out to Skodaphobes then even if I had scrapped the car after 1 years use from new it would have cost me less than it did a Ford/ Vauxhall owner in a years depreciation.

Have you ever driven one?

Yes. I think was the first on this board to try one and posted my comments then.

What is a real performance car??????????? Subaru / Mitsubishi - hmmmmmmmmmm gold wheels BIGspoiler

Or maybe a Lamborghini see above + proper family car

I can only comment on having owned a Mk1 vRS and I have to say that when that turbo kick came in, {when I needed to pass a string of trucks on the motorway say} in third and fourth gear, I couldn't care less who had written what, who thought what, or what colour the brakes were!! That bird just flew past everything and I was grinning my face off!! And the rest of the time it was a nice practical car.

Who really gives a toss what anybody else thinks of their choice of motor ?

For what I paid for mine I could have bought a Bentley Turbo R (albeit 20 years old ) or a decent old Porker, or a 4 year old Shogun, but I didn't ! I bought a Skoda, because I like it !

Can we put a stop to this ridiculous & pointless argument now ? It's getting boring.

Spoil Sport I was enjoying that, my ire was just getting irked:P

It looks pretty objective to me - he talks about both pros and cons. Nobody said he had to love it.

Tag Team posting, excellent :friday:

What is your definition of this?

He obviously has an inferiority complex :D

What is your definition of this?

Let me put it this way. It certainly isn't an Octy vRS or the Passat estate with the same engine would be one too. It isn't an Audi A4 2.0 T without the silly stuff either or what would that make the 4.2 S4 (with no spoiler of course)?

To get a perpective, I bought a Citroen BX 16v way back in 1990, sixteen years ago, without any turbo and just 1905cc that would match the performance of the Octy vRS mk2.
