Oil temperature gauge

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just noticed that my oil temp reading is not working in the computer on the dash, its just displaying three dashes.

I was wondering if it's just something that needs retro fitting or is actually not working.

Does anyone have any info on this or advise as to how to get it working as if really like to be able to keep an eye on oil temp.

Cheers,

Apreciate any help!

Oil needs to be up to 60 degrees (from memory) before it displays a figure. Can take quite a while this time of year, probably never reaches it in town.

50 before it registers as already stated in cold weather it’ll struggle to reach that even with 10 minutes town driving.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I drive over an hour to work each day with a mix of town and duel carriageway, and I've never seen it register an actual value.

I'll do a bit of digging tomorrow and see if there's any other reasons for It to not register.

I did see on another post on here somewhere that it can depend weather the car is set for long life servicing? Unsure of whether this effects my model or not though!

Appeciate the help,

Thanks

Mine was working prior to a major service, after the service it was showing the same as yours, popped back in to the independent that had carried out the service and he switched it back on for me,

He said it was because he had switched my car from long life servicing to yearly but I'm sure it was on yearly prior to the service.

The oil sensor will have been switched off. DM Keith dealership told me it was faulty and wanted £95 plus fitting to replace it even though it had been reported whilst under warranty.

I had already read on here that the sensor can be switched off as part of the servicing. I took mine to a lad to have various VCSD adjustments including coding the towbar I had just fitted and had the oil sensor switched back on for £20.

If you have no joy with the dealership, go see someone with VCDS.

The usual reason for losing the Oil Temperature reading is a Technician with all the gear and no idea when changing Flexible / Variable Servicing to Fixed ,

no faults with the system, just their skills.

So can be made to function again with the tech with the knowledge enabling, at a dealerships cost not the customer.

If you buy a car already serviced and with oil temp already gone, then use someone with the ability to enable again.  5 minutes of their time.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I've only had the car a couple of months and not Perticullaly familiar with the whole VAG group.

I'll pop into a dealer and see what they say, although it hasn't worked since I had the car so no idea how long ago it got switched off.

I usually service and work on all my cars myself so would be handy to find out what intervals my car is set on at the moment! Looking at the logbook it should be yearly.

I'll let you know how I get on!

Thanks

The variations do seem to alter a little from car to car, but by far the biggest complaint is when Skoda don't reset the service indicator properly.

By default the oil temperature gauge is turned off when the service interval is reset from variable (long life) to fixed (annual).

Sometimes it reappears by itself when rest back to variable, other times it needs to be manually turned on using the diagnostic equipment.

My 2011 Superb is on fixed intervals and I was able to turn on the oil temp gauge using VCDS.

If you don’t have any joy with the dealers or they want to rip you off for the privilege, then get someone with VCDS to do it for you and see what other options you can switched on too.
