Tyre/Road Noise advice

Recommended Posts

I missed your reply.

There will be a big difference with a specific design and properly bonded insert from the manufacturer (extensive testing) and a retrofit. What if your lining separates/bunches and causes a hot spot? What if the adhesive reacts with the foam and/or tyre?

If you think you can match Michelins or Continentals hundred million euros worth of scientific research just by sticking a bit of foam inside a tyre thats fine. If you kill yourself doing it, thats fine. If you injure or kill someone else then that's not only stupid but criminal.

Make sure your insurance knows about your experimentation.

My opinion is road noise in the cabin is mainly vibration/shock passed mechanically and not acoustically via the suspension to the floor pan. i.e. road / tyre tread to sidewall to wheel to suspension components to the floor pan via the mounts.

Cars with different suspensions running on a well isolated sub frame fare much better.

I suggest that all the moaners who keep insisting that the Superb is a noisy car should drive an Octavia Estate. We have tried 3 and walked quickly away from all of them, one was noisy to the point of causing the wife pain in her ears.

Our Superb 1.4 TSi SE on Pirelli P7's is without doubt one of the quietest cars we have owned. The Mondeo came close decent roads (on Pirelli P6000) but that was very noisy on poor surfaces. The BMW 118d was a nice place to be and would have given the Superb a good challenge but the Leon that followed the BMW matched it and the Superb beats the Leon.

Skidpan, I think the difference is you have SE spec with 215 55 17.. I have SEL with 235 45 18. In hindsight, I should have avoided the low profile tyres.

I have driven many octavias (we own one) fabias (we own two) and two of these cars came with very noisy oe tyres also (dunlop and bridgestone) although the fabia that came on Continentals was quiet. The old Seat Alhambra on 215 60 15 Continentals was in comparison road noise silent, but that had suspension that used subframes front and rear.

All cars now on michelin/goodyear/vredestein all season tyres much quieter

It is down to individual perceptions and expectations to a large degree, but I was expecting better.

Hi, do you know what is the reason why cloth ineriors are quiter than leather in Superb? How did you come to this conclusion?

Cloth is a softer surface and will absorb more sound.

Try removing the carpet and curtains at home and see how different the TV sounds.

Correct. Wider tyres will always make more noise. Fancy big wheels with wide tyres may have showroom appeal and be something to boast about at the pub (if you are so inclined) but since the standard option will always provide more than sufficient grip and be cheaper to replace there is no logical reason to specify the bigger ones.

However, we have a Fabia on order for the wife. The SE comes with 185 60 and the SE-L 215 45 thus for me the SE was the preferred spec. Problem was to spec the 2 cars up to our requirements the only extras needed on the SE-L were rear tints and rear electric windows, on the SE the list was very long.  It made the SE far more expensive than the SE-L and would leave more than enough cash for a set of quieter tyres should they be needed. Strange thing was, when we tried the Fabia on the 215 tyres it seemed fine on all the variable surfaces on a 50 mile drive. To be certain I tried another and that was fine as well. One was on Dunlops, the other Bridgestones.

The wifes current car is fitted with Bridgestones, on decent tarmac its fine, on old tarmac its deafening. Her winter tyres were Nokians and they were about the same on decent tarmac but still fine on the old stuff.

I’ve owned both and driven a few others. This would be my explanation too, cloth absorbs background noise of which there seems to be a bit in the Superb.

by install sound-deadening i got 7 of 10 isolation from outside noises

but just 3 of 10 for suspension noises, i have feeling all the body of the car works as one big sub woofer on rough roads

these pictures aren't mine, but my car went trough similar procedure

Hi

I have done sonud-deadening to my MK2 and also for MK3.

For MK2 I made full body isolation like on this link: https://www.drive2.com/l/463932060466151620/ It does not take away road noise, it comes from suspension and is carried on to the body where it amplifies. It helps to improve soundsystem  and definetly reduces noise for back seat. As a bonus doors will close like on premimum cars and raindrops are not so audible.

On my MK3 I only made sound-deadening for doors and boot. (for sound and backseat noise). For road noise I am planning to change my Coninental Premium Contact5 to GoodYear Efficentgrip. (I have 17" wheels).

  • 4 weeks later...

Made tyre change from Continental ContiPermiumContact5 215/55 R17 W to Goodyear Effcient Grip Performance 215/55 R17 V.

Conclusion:

  1. GY has softer edges and is overall softer - Ride became comfortable. CPC5 was stiff and I could feel all the road bumps.
  2. Vibration/shock from rough tarmac is supressed so it does not disturb like it did with CPC5-s. It is still present, but it does not pass low level vibration and does not make the annoing cabin boom.
  3. On smooth tarmac, there is no noise difference,  GY is softer. If you like sporty driving, then GY is not the best choice.

I am currently satisfied, I can listen to Canton without cabin boom :)

I wonder how much result does this exact deadening project add.. Is it quieter than A6? 450€ (conversation says) that's super cheap for the scope of the project... I know its not ur car :D just wondering...

weren't cheap at all, 1k € for interior and trunk
~100 € wheel arches
what surprised me, also adding ~30 € Rubber sealants to the doors
made huge improvement too

You did it your self or gave to some one else? I spent about 400-500€ but did all my self. All except car floors. And I also got total about 30-35kg of material there. I don't feel like my car is super quiet, that's why I am asking. My biggest disappointment right now at this stage of deadening is wind noise (rear right doors, I wrote same in another topic) and I think windows really do ****ty job at letting noise through. I don't have acustic glass because Skoda in Slovenia at time of order did not show / mention that as addon any where...

When I did drive A6 it felt like u don't even hear engine till 3000rpm. Idk maybe it was excitement at the time or was it something else... No idea. But entire suspension is dead quiet on Audi. Even A4... The road nose was also sooo minimal... For some weird reason I think my friends A4 is quieter than my Superb. And I did like 4mm anti-vibration every where, doors 15mm sound absorption material, trunk also, I did a loot. Its just annoying me. Also noises from bushes are still present (now minor knocking sounds, but u can hear them) and there is always something in interior that's rattling... I fixed all I knew / found... Now I'm starting to lose patience heavily...

P.S.: I added all those rubbers u mentioned too! One I did not the one at front doors that I couldn't even figure out how u did it :D I don't have small enough hands. The one on bottom helps a lot with water not getting in! Its super cool! however hehe, sometimes water stays behind the rubber, which isn't so great either. Thinking to make some sort of path for water to get out...

Coming from a Seat Leon 5F (Mk3) I noticed that the tires makes a little bit more noise in the Superb, but when I think about it now after 4 days. It is simply because of the car in general being so much more silent than for example the Seat so that the tire noise actually stands out.

I currently have 2.5bar pressure on my tires (215/55/17 Michelin Primacy 3) and I will try to lower the pressure to 2.2bars.

Someone suggested that might be something to try and fiddle with.

done!

installed 225/55r17 97Y 71dB Good Year EAGLE F1 ASYMMETRIC 5 SoundComfort

foam sponge works, but only asphalt joints and potholes.

on smooth asphalt new are little bit louder than previous 225/55r17 97Y 69dB Michelin Primacy 3

which were huge improvement if compare to stock 215/55r17 94W 71dB Pirelli Cinturato P7

Absolutely correct. I had an Octavia hatch on OE Bridgestones which was painfully noisy. Ditched them with 5mm left on them for Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons all round. It transformed the car. Previously tyre noise dominated at all speeds. Afterwards it was gone. Usual mix of a bit of wind/engine/ etc.

@Paikesejanku

Tere!

Estonian asphalt is perfect when compared to Latvian :)

haven't tested yet outside Riga,

my conclusion is, printed in specs dB value is more important for comfort

and the best result can be reached only by sum 68-69 dB tire to sound deadening foam.

in Riga i weren't able find any alternative for bought Good Year 71 dB

unfortunately all the links are dead.

I completed the sealants around the doors and the bonnet and can say this made pretty big difference.
