A”Better drivers prefer manuals....”...... okaaaay! Most racing cars use sequential gearboxes....including LeMans, F1, Indy, WRC.....the list goes on. They use them because changes are faster and the boxes can handle more power. Also you will find most F1 drivers daily runarounds are autos....

I think what @shyVRS245 meant to say was "enthusiasts" prefer manual gearboxes, as they mistakenly feel it's a purer form of driving. But as @wardth correctly states COMPETITIVE racecars have semi-auto sequential gearboxes because if you don't, you ain't competitive.

Bottom line, love them or loath them, manual gearboxes are very soon to be confined to the history books sure, they'll be a few ludits (sorry enthusiasts) whom still prefer them but just the same as drum brakes, window winders & diesel engines their days are Fn numbered.

To be fair at least one review said the DSG doesn't handle as well as the manual due to the extra weight over the front wheels.

Agreed take up of automatics in the UK has come on a lot in the last few years but cost is still a factor for me on the DSG.

I think we'll all be buying electric cars before autos dominate in the UK across all types of car like the USA currently.

All mobility scooters are auto's because old folk can't handle too much to think about at the same time. Sure all of us have been nearly run over by one on a pavement if we're being honest. Lots of oldies have low speed crashes because they can't remember whether it's in drive or reverse until they smacked into something or someone.:blush

I'd have chosen an auto 245 if it was a proper ZF, not a DSG.

Back to servicing. I've only done 8500 miles and computer is saying only 900 miles until the first service!

Did you choose fixed at 1 year or 9,400 miles servicing or did the garage set it up that way at thr PDI?

I wasn't aware there was a choice! 9400 is a bit low, 10k minimum is usually the norm? It will be a year old mid Feb.

Should have come from the factory with Long Life oil to give upto 2 years or 18,500 miles (30,000km) which mine did. Dealer might be trying it on with you to get more business (money) off you.

Irony being that most electric/hybrid cars have auto boxes....

Most electric cars don't need a gearbox at all. Max torque at 0 rpm.

Except to go forwards or backwards....!

Been looking at a hybrid as my daily commute has gone from 10 miles to 200. I wouldn’t have anything but an automated gearbox now for ease of driving.

Electric motors can do reverse without a gearbox of course. Ok so electric cars need some gears but they don't need "speeds" like an IC car.

Booked my car in for the first service today on January 8th 2019. 100% reliable so far and long may that continue.

Mine went in for first service in August. But somehow, some mistakes were made when I'd booked it in.

Long story short, they didn't service it, or change the 2 tyres that I'd asked them to change, or fix the original issue I'd booked it in for!

I've since been too busy to get it back to them and I'm over 19500 miles. I'll be booking in, in January, to have 1st and 2nds done.

Think I would change my dealer/garage if I had such awful (lack of) service.

Here's the long story, now I've got time to write it all.

I'd originally booked in due to a squealing noise coming from the passenger side, which was more obvious with the windows down.

After booking I'd noticed my front tyres were getting close to the mark, so called them up and ordered 2 tyres to replace the fronts (but not paid for).

I then hit my 1st service mileage so called them up for a 3rd time and asked to have that done too.

Took my car in at 9am and took one of the service guys out for a spin to point out the noise, which of course he couldn't hear cos he was older! (I'm 28, it was quite high pitched and very annoying), I'd then received a call at 4pm saying "all done, it's just being washed".

When I got there, the invoice I was handed had no charge on it for warranty repair, but only mentioned the repair.

I mentioned the tyres and the 1st service and the guy didn't have a clue, nothing on the system about it, I'd phoned through to service desk each time too.

I was given a matte black vrs 245 MUG, told that when I book back in I'll be "sorted out with something due to the muck up" and told I'd be called by them to book in again.

They never called.

The noise came back after 2 days.

I got 2 new front tyres from somewhere else maybe a week or 2 later and magically, the squealling noise dissappeared!

Might ask for a MUG now you mention it.:D

Well im going to be joining the club and collecting a red 245 estate tomorrow.  Ive been reading a few tips on checks when collecting a new purchase on the forums here.  Is there a definitive checklist anyone can recommend?

Also what is the school of thinking on running in. Drive it hard to take it easier for the first 2k?

First Greg welcome to the 245 club and Ihave had many new cars and generally try not to exceed 4,000revs for the first 600 miles. Try not to keep at the same revs, so don't cruise at 70mph in top gear for 300 miles and give yourself a chance to bed in the tyres and brakes for at least 200 miles. Also check your tyre pressures at the Dealership if you can should be 2.4bar for 18" tyres and 2.7bar for 19" tyres. Finally enjoy the car.

Drive it like you just stole it, what could possible go wrong, I take it you haven't actually bought it out right ? If you have, Shy might be right but, FFS don't tell him I said that, he'll never get his ego in the Fn car

Its always polarising asking this sort of question.  Thanks for the welcome too.  I opted for the smoother option when I rebuilt the engine on my classic Audi so I may do the same on this too.  I'll certainly check the tyres tomorrow too.  This time around I have gone for an outright purchase.

I'll be playing around with some of the VCDS coding tweaks to see if I can enable some of these with the obdeleven I have.  If not I may finally relent and buy myself a VCDS.

We are now worried, (combined age = 140 years), when our cars need to move we seem to have a choice of "D" or "R",  alongside the lever thingy  (+ the little display between the big round dials  shows P, R N, D, etc) should we ask "D" to be replaced by  "F" for forwards?

As for mobility scooters / electric wheelchairs my late (= deceased) wife had one of each & being electric they didn't require gearboxes, just a switch to reverse the polarity of the DC power supply......

Exhaust POP sound / DSG pop when gear shift up/down

is there one part or several parts to mod/tune to get the exhaust pop,

just a tune, or just a sports downpipe swap?

thanks
