Tyre pressures

Featured Replies

Anyone who is expecting delivery of new car...please check your tyre pressures, got my superb sportline delivered yesterday and immediately I've noticed its extremely hard ride...went to near by petrol station and all tyres had 44psi in them as opposed to recommended 37.

Good advice MarioVrs. I remember a driver training session a few years ago where the driver of the 3 month old Honda Civic stated how badly the car gripped the road. I knew they were quite good in the handling department, so I did the old thumb test and pushed into the side of the tyres. There was no give, so I stuck a pressure gauge onto them. They were meant to be around 32psi, but all four tyres were at 48-50psi, no proper pre-delivery check done by the garage eh. Let his tyres down to the correct pressure and once out on the road, he noticed how much better it gripped around corners when pushed and so much softer a ride on uneven surfaces. We should all check our tyre pressures at least once a month, more often if possible. When you get a new car however, fully check the motor for yourself the day you pick it up.

After a few false alarms from the TPMS and I now check my tyres once a month like roaddetective has mentioned.

If tyres are over or under their recommended PSI then this not only degrades grip and compromises the ride but the MPG will also be impacted.

Stupid that the hardware the workers use if not setup to limit the amount of air pumped into a tyre.

A 20p a time air machine on a petrol forecourt has this function for heavens sake

it's not possible without sensors, current Indirect TPMS uses data from ABS

@All

recommending install Direct TPMS , it costs just €44

I am paranoid about tyres.  I am responsible for the maintenance of three cars and a bike.  All tyres are checked weekly with a decent gauge, TPMS or not.  Overkill?  Yes, perhaps, but with the value of the job they do and the potential disaster that might occur with tyres at incorrect pressures I don’t think so.

Rightly so.

At the end of the day the rubber is the thing that keeps you on the road.

Always buy the best tyres you can and always make sure that they're roadworthy and at the correct pressures.

Reading Roaddetective's post, I am glad he knew the fault. A dodgy garage would have noticed the pressure and told the Civic owner that he had hit a pot hole, damaged a suspension leg and /or wishbone and quote them £400 to FIX the car. Parked it up, made tea, let the pressure out, made more tea, drove the car round a bit to "Road-test" it, adding a few miles and perhaps making a few deliveries. Hand it back the following day to a "Happy" Motorist who now had a proper handling car!
