Alternator

Featured Replies

Evening all . I just brought a s/h alternator of eBay for my fabia vrs asz . The guy I brought it off said it was used on his asz for past 8 months no problem. But before I fit it . My concern is a fixed pulley version . Ie it hasn’t got a clutched pulley .

will this be ok ?

Regards Tony

If it is the same as your one then that is fine, if it has different pulley but the rest is the same then swap the pulley over from your old one.

None of them have fixed pulleys, sounds like yours is a dud.

but a bargain?  I suppose it depends on if you are able to swop the pulleys over.

It was cheap ... and the pulley definitely looks fixed . It’s hekd on by a normal hexagonal nut . Unlike the 33 splined ones ...  certainly baffled me .

If the (freewheel) pulley on the alternator that's being replaced is original as far as you know, it might be worth chucking a new one in the direction of the replacement alternator. May also be an idea to check the brush length on the replacement alt before fitting it.

Check position of pulleys relative to each other, if you decide to use you may find that the pulley position relative to the mounting bracket is different - my daughters petrol polo fixed pulley is in a different location compared to my diesels freewheel one (think it is closer to the alternator body).

I will do . They guy I brought it from says he run it on a vrs asz engine for past 8 months . Only broke fabia as cambelt snapped .

What would the issue of having a fixed pulley be ?? As my Old mk2 golfs has fixed pulleys . Why does the fabia need a clutched one ?

Both i gasoline. The freewheel is to save fuel, theoretical. Some says less wear on drive belt, also. May be 0,0001 l/mile? I do not believe in Santa Claus or VAG.
