It'll be a separate partition - when you format any drive, you format just the partition you can see.

The partition is even more hidden than that, you need special software to even see it - which the SD Association are not about to give out on demand.

  • The "hidden secure data" is stored on a separate part of the card that is not affected by the format. It is quite literally "hidden" and can't be seen by the computer doing the formatting.

  • Exactly this, I'm pretty sure there are no magic partitions or hidden data involved, it's just the SD CID that denotes a 'Skoda' SD card or not.   The SD CID should be one-time programmable

I was sure the restriction on the SD cards was made possible by the SD cards CID value.

Have we heard of anyone "corrupting" their SD card after formatting it using random tools, such as partitionmagic etc?

I format mine every time I update the maps (twice a year), so it's been done 7 times now with no problems.

Do do have any issues with your system, such as Time, Date and Year resetting itself and/or the lights not changing over should you wander over to the European Union.

Because I get all of the above!

I have to change everything manually.

The SD CID should be one-time programmable in the factory, although some SD cards do have re-writable CID's (certain Saumsung varients for example) which makes them very handy. I used them in the past to put the RNS-310 map updates on larger SD cards to make more space for music :)

If I remember later, I can check....

No such issues with mine - the headlamp one doesn't apply as I have halogens not bi-Xenons.

Ah. I've got LED.

  • 1 year later...

Thank you @bigade1 for the link

Just in case anyone was wondering, there is never any need to reformat an SD card. Just delete what's on there.
