Famous p0299...confusing...

Featured Replies

Hey folks....

I hope someone can shed a bit of a light on my dilemma...

So on my way from work on Tuesday lost the power... Was doing around 75mph... sudden loss, no bangs and no smoke... just wouldn't go past 75mph and couldn't hear turbo kicking in at all even with the pedal to the floor. So I assume the limp mode. The main thing is that NO engine light came on... So, I got home, connected OBD reader and VOILA - famous p0299 code... Checked all the hoses connections no splits and nothing lose... However the intake pipe feels a bit free at the EGR port....not snug at all.

Anyways...erased the code. Drove to work and back following day (100miles) and all good. but yesterday the same scenario... and again NO ECL at all...

Got home took the intake pipe off to check the EGR - not much of the grime but cleaned anyway. Everything seems intact pipes wise... No oil stains or anything out of ordinary....

The Fabia is MK2 2009, just under 140000miles. Regular servicing with Mobil oil. No problems so far with the car.

No heard any noise from turbo so far and not heard since reset the code...

I can recall about a year ago had an issue on the way home - loud bang, a lot of smoke. Pulled over and for some reason, intake pipe became detached from the EGR.... popped it back on and not had any problems since... (just thought it is worth mentioning it in case it is something relevant).

I have attached the screenshot of the freeze frame in case that can shed the light.

Really hope someone can help as it's my workhorse and really would struggle without it...

Regards...

Anyone?

You mentioned the EGR pipe being loose. Did you rectify that problem first? Bit pointless looking at other things without checking that first.

It's hard to say whether it is loose or not... it is fully in but has a tad play when you wiggle it... don't know if it was the cause or could be,....

I've cleaned EGR, applied some temporary heatproof tape at the EGR pipe connection... so far no loss of power...

So it's back ..... loss of power on the way home from work. No hard acceleration at a time. Was going at steady 70-75mph. Again no noise or smoke. just loss of power. No CEL light either....that's just weird.

Pulled in checked with the phone - same code. Didn't erase it this time. Switched off the engine and after restarting it, it's gone and turbo back on working...

That's just weird... The tape over the inlet pipe connection is intact.

Planning to change both fuel and air filters tomorrow as a next step but looks as I'm clutching to the straws and the visit to the Skoda dealership is inevitable.... unless anyone has any other suggestions... I'm totally baffled.

p0299 - Isn't that a vacuum  sensor code?

Just an observation, coolant temperature 0 degrees? Did this happen right at the start of the journey?

  • Author

No, it was right mid journey... so no chance of being 0... especially with all that hot weather recently... I wonder how much is that a bad reading or a faulty temperature sensor... but then I would have an issue with overheating... I've seen a post somewhere that a guy had the same problem until he changed a thermostat...don't understand the link but it worked for him...
