Do you stick with Diesel?!

I switched from a non dpf 2l Skoda Octavia diesel to my current 1.4l Tsi Combi because my mileage and journey pattern now is not high enough to cater for regeneration in a new diesel with a dpf.

£30  road tax was an unexpected bonus.

I did exactly the same. Well, I was forced because my Octy 2 turbo exploded so considering the car had 150k on it (plus some rust was forming in places) I decided to write it off (sold for scrap) and purchased a petrol.

Four reasons for changing to petrol :

I was beginning to feel a bit guilty driving a diesel with all the negative press at the moment. Also not sure how tax would change in the near future.

I now do a lot of town driving (so stop and start driving) and this would be a serious no no for a DPF filter. I could imagine a constant worry of whether it was regenerating ok possibly forcing me to drive just to clear it.

I was getting sick of the noise from the derv engine compared to the wife's petrol fabia which is so quiet in the cabin.

I really fancied a change to a petrol for driving reasons.

My Leaf and Skoda cost exactly the same to insure.

Thanks, that's interesting to know.

Sticking to diesel as long as the bosses on the farm do. I'm allowed to fill up from their 'white diesel' tank at the main house as and when I need it.:)

Buy whichever you want. Petrol probably makes the most sense with your mileage and the 1.4/1.5tsi would probably be a nice compromise of economy and performance if you found a 1.8tsi a bit thirsty.

Petrol = more refined, cheaper per litre, no DPF regens.

Wow, totally forgot about this one

Only ever owned one diesel (330d) and the disappointment was unrivalled if the station had no gloves left!

The trick is to always take a spare pair and keep them in the car :nerd:

My 2015 184 will be replaced soon by the new 245 when you can actually order one. This will be my last diesel - the DPF / EGR time bomb just isn't worth it. I also miss the noise of petrol turbos,

So that's what those folk are doing walking aimlessly all over the forecourt!

Chap in a MK5 Golf GTi tried to impress me with the sound of his modified dump valve accelerating in 2nd gear but I decided to let him listen to me quietly pulling away from him!:D

I do 16 miles each way commuting in the countryside b roads and it's no probs at all with the dpf in 2.0tdi. No need to go petrol. I intend to keep it until 160,000 by which time I'm guessing electric cars will have come on a bit more, and not be small/impractical for long drives. Biggest cost hit is depreciation and the difference in what you can sell your car for vs the price you pay to buy a replacement! The winner when you replace a car is the dealer.

I do a very similar commute distance wise albeit about 60% is on motorway if I choose to do so. When I purchased my Octavia last year, diesel was already going out of favour. I took out a 3 year personal loan and after that, it will be my car. I intend to keep it a good few years after that so will allow me to save up a deposit on its replacement. I am not worried about mileage constraints and I know it wont be worth much, but will hopefully be cost effective motoring until we all know what (might) be happening in the future. My commute has been the same for 14 years and I am on my 3rd car with a DPF and havent had any problems,

zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Watch a 'tuned' Octavia 300 plus pulling away is better than watching you pull one off while taking selfies.
