Skomaz,

Went to see your Suzuki Swift Mild Hybrid at the Suzuki dealership today.

I'm impressed!!

I think it will be my wife's next car!

Saw 2 hybrid cars the weekend the Toyota Yaris Hybrid & the Suzuki Swift Mild Hybrid.

1st Toyota Yaris Hybrid.

Toyota have got a excellent technology here but it's desperately let down by shockingly poor styling!

It looks as dated & boring as a Ford Fiesta - a true Pensioners Transport.

And I speak as a 72 year old.

Suitable for 'Old Farts' only.

I cannot see anybody below 50 years of age buying one of these.

This is a New Car that's only been on the market about 12/18 months!

Come on Toyota, you can do better than this!

2nd Suzuki Swift Mild Hybrid.

Now, in the Swift we have a totally different car to the Yaris.

The Swift is Funky & very Trendy!

It's styling will definitely appeal to the you young (and old) as against the Yaris that will only appeal to those in 'God's Waiting Room'.

And the Lateral thinking that Suzuki have applied to the Hybrid concept is extremely attractive.

Go and look & discover more about the Swift Mild Hybrid, think you'll like it!

Ronn,

Congratulations on taking a closer look at the Swift - I thought you'd be impressed as I certainly was when I saw it and was even more so after a drive!

Let us know what you eventually go for and if you have any queries regarding general ownership of the Swift I'll be happy to help if I can.

My opinion of the two cars (to be fair I’ve only looked on the manufacturers website + autotrader)...

i prefer the exterior styling of the Yaris

i prefer the interior styling of the swift (mainly due to the D shaped steering wheel )

There’s more technology in a Yaris than the swift

If these were the only two cars on the market I’d choose the Yaris.

Absolutely, there is more technology in the Yaris Hybrid.

I agree.

But the Yaris is let down by unimaginative styling & dynamically (I have read in all the Motoring Reviews), it's a poor driving platform/chassis that is totally unengaging for the driver.

In layman's terms, boring to drive.

As a said, a very good Pensioner's choice, safe and unadventurous.

But as 72 year old myself, the styling looks too 'last year', too much like other small hatches, Ford Fiesta, etc: for me.

Going back to the Technology in the Yaris Hybrid.

There is an awful lot but, it's under used as far as I can see.

Toyota have gone to a lot of expense & effort to develope a Petrol/Electric Automatic Hybrid that on does about 1.5 miles on Electric Only Power before the Petrol Engine cuts in & takes over.

Pointless to me!

The overall MPG is only marginally better than the Citigo Greentech, & with all that expensive Technical on board.

What Toyota should have done was to go that extra mile (excuse the pun), put a much larger capacity Battery in it & made the Yaris Hybrid into a Plug In Hybrid.

Now, that would give you far, far greater range on Electric Only Power, maybe 50+ Miles extra & made the Yaris Hybrid a far more attractive purchase.

That's were Toyota have missed the opportunity to me!

Toyota have the know how, they just didn't do it!!!

The car nearer to a Up!MiiCitigo would be a Suzuki Ignis and available with Light Hybrid.

I was in one as a passenger at the weekend, i just could not live with the light coloured plastic.

I'm not keen on the styling of side, back quarter of the Ignis.

It looks a bit to utility to me.

A bit like a van.

Too much metal.

They are Fugly, but then i like Fugly is it is function over style and i can not see the outside when driving, and inside hard plastic does not bother me if the heater , cooler. pedals. switches, seats and leather covered steering wheel are all in the correct place and comfortable.  Pale plastics are a no no though. i had a light plastic interior with a Picanto and that was the only thing about it that annoyed me, it was still like new after 6 years though.

No wear and tear of seats. mats or door trims and no scratching of the plastic.

I had a new Toyota lQ that looked very old inside after a few weeks as the plastics scratched so easily.

My 15 year old Jimny has no scratching of the interior plastic, and it is used and abused with no care or attention.

The Suzuki has got White/Ivory colour plastic trim on the Dashboard and on the door cards.

It looks good and helps to 'lift' the black dashboard and interior door panels.

I like it!

Have you seen the new 2019 Auris? Got teased beginning of this year...

I’d have that Auris, the styling is certainly different to others.

It’ll have 2 hybrid engines a 1.8 and a 2L.

Certainly something to think about.

A smidge over £17,600 gets you in the cheapest ones which is getting on for about £5,000 of a discount, if you can get one someplace.

Interesting thought but I'm assuming that you're referring to the hybrid element only?  The Swift SZ5 SHVS Hybrid includes stuff like lane departure warning, collision avoidance braking, radar cruise control, auto lights, auto high beam, touchscreen interface, DAB, USB media, DVD playback when stationary, satnav, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, voice control, reversing camera, auto air conditioning, Bluetooth audio and phone etc. all as standard, as well as the usual high spec toys...  In fact the only thing I think it hasn't got is heated seats and a self dipping rear view mirror (the latter I'm not convinced on anyhow)!

Compared to the Yaris the only thing I can see that the top-spec Yaris has that the Swift doesn't is traffic sign recognition...???

I’m referring to the entire car, as you said the only noticeable difference with technology as we’ve both seen is traffic sign recognition. However there are slight differences I.e sound systems, the swift having 4, Yaris having 6.

The main point being hybrid technology and Toyota having more experience.

Another slight advantage is Toyota having a 5 year warranty, giving customers that little bit more peace of mind.

6 speaker system on the sz5 so no difference there but I'll give you the experience and warranty points although given the reliability of both marques that's probably neither here nor there.

So basically there is no tech advantage at all with the Toyota...   Despite your initial comment...   ???

Don’t forget that sign recognition!

It's very simple to me!

It all comes down to the fact that in my opinion the Toyota Yaris looks dated.

The Yaris Hybrid has High Tech internals clothed in last year's fashions with under developed handling characteristics.

It's a safe car to go to the afternoon Bingo sessions in.

Toyato have built in some fantastic Technology into their Yaris Hybrid.

The problem is - it's wearing the clothes of an old man!

Their are plenty of boring Old Farty looking cars on the high street that look like the Yaris Hybrid, - Ford Fiesta, Mitsubishi Mirage, etc:

Toyota should have put their high Technology Hybrid mechanics into a more Funky looking modern suit of clothes so that it appeals to the more youthful.

Not so it appeals to those in God's Waiting Room.

There are plenty tarted up cars with show and not much go for those that need bling and useless tat, sport / ST-line / vRS ? / GT / s-Line, M-sport, r-line  badges and decals.

Toyota do quick cars for those that want them.

All just kidology anyway in the UK since there is a 60 mph NSL with 70 on that class of road.

EV's and Hybrids actually accelerate to the NSL and speed restrictions quite well and Manufacturers are not making a big story about it, maybe playing down the actual 0-62 mph.

The Kia Niro Hybrid 1.6 Petrol Hybrid 6 speed auto can shift if you chose the mode and floor the throttle.

Cars with the 'Cloak of invisibility' is quite nice and boring one foot in the grave styling is nice when Reps in low emissions Diesels with show and little go are up your jacksy.

I’m a ‘ youth’ and find the Yaris quite attractive, maybe I’m just in the minority? Saying that, it’s not the most attractive but it’s up there... I do think Toyota have ‘cracked it’ with the new Auris - see my earlier post.

just like the Citigo Monte Carlo, 1L non turbo, lacks the ‘go’!

I quite fancy an electric car, whether it be a citycar or not, it’ll certainly have more ‘go’ from 0. Instant torque sounds fun

I think you'll like the Swift. I've been very impressed by mine. Currently around 27,000 miles on the clock, fuel economy is around the same as the Citigo (slightly better possibly), but in a roomier, faster and better equipped package. A highlight for me has been the headlights which are absolutely excellent.
