Advice on allowed / recommended wheel rim size please

Featured Replies

I'm looking to replace my 18" rims on my 2012 superb 170 hp elegance with smaller ones  to increase ride comfort on the potholed rural roads where I live.

I want to stay insured so will stay within manufacturer's recommendations

The handbook says that recommended tyre sizes for my car are

205/55 R16 91 V
205/50 R17 93 V
225/45 R17 91 V
225/40 R18 92 Y (this is what I currently have for summer use)

Can anyone tell me what spec rim size (eg 18 x 7.5J ET 49) will fit the either the R16 or the R17 tyres?

(I note that under snow chains the manual mentions rims of 7J x 16",  6J x 16" or 6J x17" so presumably I can have either 7J or 6 J - maybe 7.5J ? But it doesn't mention the appropriate ET values for different rims)

Once I know what rims I can get I can search to find less expensive car models that use the same rims so that I don't pay through the nose for Skoda ones. (:-)

Thanks

Regards

Thank you, interesting thread.

However it slightly adds to the confusion as in your table the speed ratings for the 125KW 2.0l pre facelift engine are different to those in the manual for the 205/55 R16 tyre (94V as opposed to 91V) and also for the 225/45 R17 tyre (94W as opposed to 91V)

I presume pre facelift means superb II as opposed to superb III

Even more confusing, depending upon which superb II manual you look at some don't even have tyre ratings whereas others do.

Where did the table in your thread come from?

Nope ... pre-facelift is the Superb 2008-2012, facelift is 2013-2015 (basically the same car, apart from the slight cosmetic changes in the exterior and the interior design)

Pre facelift means Superb 2 from introduction through model year 2013. Facelift means the updated Superb introduced for the 2014 model year (in most markets these models went on sale in the latter half of 2013).

The information comes from Skoda's service manual which I purchased through the erwin service portal.

OK thanks, mine must be the pre facelift model then 2012 but not the newer shape.

I'll take your service manual as gospel then and use that info, very useful..

However, unless I do it anonymously, I'm not too sure about asking my insurance company whether my premium will change if I don't do a mod but simply fit one of the standard recommended wheels that could have been fitted from new . In the past I've found they've treated a simple question along the lines of "If I were to do this would it change my premium" as if I had already done it. Think it's called in the trade 'a propensity to claim'.

@iceman2

You can find allowed sizes for your car on the inside of the fuel flap - there should be a label - then you won't have to call insurance company.

That's only the tyre sizes. The tables I posted have the full list of type approved wheel and tyre combinations for all engines. Every other list on stickers or manuals is going to be an incomplete subset of that.

Hi,

If you are looking to change your wheels I would recommend checking with your insurer to make sure they are happy with them.

Dan.
