too much oil

Featured Replies

For those cars that have had the EA189 emissions fix, there is a 2 year / 160,000 mile trust building measure for all emissions and fuel related components...

The only way the oil level can rise, without putting more oil in, is if it's being diluted with diesel fuel. There are a number of ways this can happen, as mentioned above, failed DPF regenerations, but also leaking injectors (all covered under the trust building measure).

Diluted engine oil is bad, it'll adversely affect the EGR, turbo, DPF and engine lubrication (bore wash). Not good.

Wait until they diagnose the fault before reminding them of the 'trust building measure'.

thanks for that

A water leak will also put the oil level up, but this is often accompanied by other symptoms).  The biggest issues with fuel dilution are thinning the viscosity (meaning thinner oil film thickness) and diluting the additives. You can also see increased oil oxidation through FAME (biodiesel) contamination (if it’s a diesel).  In a very extreme case you could see hydraulic locking or impact issues.

Put simply, oil level noticeably going up is a bad thing.
