Changing from a Octavia RS TDI MK3 to Superb Sportline. Any tips, advice or experience?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

So I'm currently driving a 2017 Octavia RS TDI and I have a Superb Sportline 150bhp TDI on order. What differences should I expect? I know there are slot of upgrades in terms of the standard kit.

What kinda difference should I expect in performance? I know it won't be as quick which I'm fine with. Just curious as to how much of a difference I can expect along with any other differences between the two.

Thanks all!!!

Did you test drive the 150hp Superb before you ordered?

I went from a 184 TDI Leon FR ST to the Superb 150 TDI Sportline hatch; the Leon being quite similar to the Octavia vRS.  If anything it made me realise how underwhelming the 181bhp TDI unit is.  I actually regretted getting the 184 FR by the time I got back from the dealers.  The engine just doesn't feel as brisk or as responsive as the numbers would suggest.  Within a month it was remapped and it transformed the car.    Previous to the 184 FR I had the 150 FR (again TDI) and it was a much nicer engine; more willing to rev, smoother and felt just as quick in the real world.

Based on my experience with the Leon(s) I test drove the 190 and 150 Superbs back-to-back, just to be sure and I wasn't at all surprised to find that the engine characteristics were the same in the Superb too.

Given the choice all over again I would still go for the 150 TDI.  I think Skoda have missed a trick by not fitting the 240 BiTDI as the 'hotter' diesel as that is in a different league of performance to the 190.

IME you'll likely miss the top-end performance of the vRS but you can at least have fun with the 150 without constantly being on the gears and in license-losing territory.  It's also more economical, quite a bit more based on some of the comments I've read on here.

I think you'll also enjoy the refinement and comfort of the Superb.  My 150 Sportline was my first Skoda in 7 years and I had it for a year before being in a position (Job change/relocation) to swap to the 280 TSI Sportline.   Whilst there's obvious drivetrain and engine differences between the two it's still the same car; great place to spend time, it just eat's miles and copes with family life really well.

Until I got the 280 the 150 TDI Sportline was the best car I've ever had; as an all-rounder, taking running costs and real-world performance into consideration then it takes some beating.

Unfortunately I wasn't able, none were in stock at my dealer. I've test drive the 190 estate which I loved. Im just curious as to how big a drop in performance I will see

Surprising how many times that gets posted. Seems the dealers never have what we want to test to hand.

I've bought two manual Octavia but only after only being able to test drive auto versions.

@penguin17 's positive comments on the 150hp version over the 'higher performance' version have been reflected by a few others on Briskoda over the years.

Be interesting to hear your comments comparing your current RS to your new car when you get it.

The main difference you may notice is that the superb is heavy and it is a large car, its as long as the mondeo estate and also the AUDI a6 avant, thus though the cars handle satisfactory they are not like driving a vrs badged octavia.

For general driving the 150bhp will be adequate enough. Logically if performance was the key factor the 280 petrol version's would have been more suited.

I looked at both the VRS and the Superb before buying..  The boy racer in me wanted the VRS, but after driving both the Superb was far superior. Keyless start, adaptive cruise, auto hold, auto handbrake.. never mind the space.. I went for a 2.0t 220bhp.. enjoy the new motor. I have heard the 150bhp is the nicer diesel..
