VRS - spare wheel and foam insert

Featured Replies

I could do with getting space saver for my 2014 VRS as it only has an air compressor (no gunk included) and tools.

Does anyone know what the part numbers are for the 18" space saver wheel & the foam insert please?

I'm assuming that a space saver from VW or SEAT would be the same?

Anyone?

A search on Ebay for 'Golf space saver' will though up a lot of kits and part kits from £50 and they have the same stud pattern as the VRS.

Isnt there an issue with caliper clearance though?

My vrs245 has 345mm discs and they would struggle to fit behind a regular spare wheel.

I thought it had to be 18" or over for the vRS, because of the calipers/discs.

Just looked at the 4 fin wheel insert pictures in situ on this thread, and it looks like it helps make up the gap in floor difference.
What I can't make out is whether this is for the estate version, which has a higher boot floor, or whether it I can use it on my hatchback without raising the floor level from standard?

If anyone has the space saver in their vRS hatchback, would you mind letting me know if you have the 4 fin wheel insert please?

Yes I have this steel space saver with this design in my Octavia Vrs on my hatch which sits flush with the boot floor. It is on an 18" wheel to clear the 340mm discs and large calipers fitted with 125/70R18 tyre. Hope this helps.:hi:

Quite a few threads on this if you search, in short

Standard spare is standard 16" steel and 205 tyre fitted to all 4 corners on some models (won't fit over 345mm brakes)

Standard vRS spare is a 18" space saver with 125 tyre (as pictured above)

Other option is a standard 17" steel with a 205 or 225 tyre on. It will fit over the brakes and a 205 tyre sits level, a 225 tyre lifts the floor marginally

I have a spare Gemini alloy in the boot. I managed to get the spare wheel insert above in as well but had to butcher the polystyrene a lot! It also lifts the boot floor a little.

For some reason i have a 205/55/16 tyre as a spare for my mk3 vrs ? I take it this won't fit or the car will be a couple of inches lower when on ?

The rolling radius will be very close - yes it's a smaller wheel but the tyre is higher profile which means the sidewall is higher which compensates.

Thanks for that PetrolDave, didn't fancy finding out that it wouldn't fit on a cold wet winters night.

I will assume you have a 2016 onwards Diesel vRS with the smaller 312mm front brakes. If that is the case then that is the correct spare. It is 205 because 225 lifts the boot floor slightly, and as said above the 55 profile gives it a similar rolling radius.

If you have the 340mm front brakes then you have the wrong spare. You need one spoken about above 17" or more to clear the brakes.

You can always put the spare on the back and the rear wheel on the front but it is a faff by the road in the rain. I guess you have the smaller brakes.

Just had a quick look and i think you might be right Flybynite ,those front brakes on my petrol vrs are pretty big.

if you have a petrol you will have 340mm brakes front and a 16" wheel will not fit over them. There are 17" steel wheels which do fit, 18" 125 spacesavers (standard vRS spare) or you can do the 2-way swap I said before.

What should be in the polystyrene insert for the 18 inch space saver?

There are 2 large voids in the side that I can't work out what they're for?

Does the compressor fit in somewhere and the tyre foam from previous setup?

Hey DC04RI've had my spare 18" arrive today and just ordered the jacking kit like yours, so does the foam insert stick out of the tyre ? is that so its at the right height to support the boot floor ? kinda looks odd.

Exactly, yes. Perfect fit to support the false floor.
