Remap or tuning box?

Featured Replies

Wondering what’s the better option as my vRS 245 is only a year old, should I go for a Revo/AMD ECU map or a piggyback tuning box?

if the box, any suggestion as there is many out there to chose from?

Depends on what your preference is.  I bought a tuning box, but never fitted it, as the insurance hike was exceptional, although tbf I didn't bother phoning round for prices.  My 220 has a Revo stage 1, which I'm very happy with.  It's not been measured yet, but is expected to be around the 300bhp mark, and it certainly feels like it.  I waited until the car was out of warranty before having the remap.  With a tuning box, at least you can pop it off relatively easily.

JKM in Portsmouth did my remap.

The insurance hike for your remap will be equally exceptional - or are you saying you're not bothering to declare it?

I cannot possibly confirm or denie....will give JKM a call as I know the have a RR.

Therenis also VAS Motion in Guildford who are Revo dealers but no RR.

The Phirm in Hartley Whitney do the APR remaps but no RR either although, Surrey Rolling Road are only in Farnborough who use team dynamic software the same as JKM so, they'll be extremely accurate.

I use a DTUK tuningbox as I'm still in warranty, they're very good for customer service.

Yes saw that The Phirm do APR and know about SRR and Charlie....always interesting times there!!

Will see what JKM offer as I would like some before and after figures.

i thought DTUK were diesel only?  How do the boxes compare to an actual map?

I have had all my cars mapped on the ECU so not any experience of the boxes.

There really is no benefit from a tuning box over a remap apart from being able to sell it on at a later date,

they are ALL detectable if a dealer really wants to find proof one has been fitted (do not be fooled by anyone who tells you different),

for me my money has always (apart from the one bad choice I made by buying a DTUK box) been Shark Performance (now Racingline after Ben sold up and moved to them) the customer service I received from Shark / Ben truly was second to non... enough for me to return with my next two cars.

Interesting.....

Have heard about Shark Performance, where are they based?

Shark were in Mansfield, but Racingline are in Milton Keynes, they do have dealers throughout the country though

Read Gizmo's last post properly. Ben sold Shark in Mansfield, where mine was mapped in Dec 17 just prior to his move. I can also thoroughly recommend his mapping. It transforms the car in every gear, making overtakes on our crowded roads much safer. Economy is still very good.

I only have positives to say with regard to revo as I used them for my leon cupra but I note they say development required for the 245 tsi still. I personally waited until my warranty was up on my leon before going stage one. Then I also took out specialist modified insurance recommended through seatcupra.net who were cheaper than the main providers, also covering me for track days too.

So many options, Revo, AMD, APR, Shark and the tuning boxes.....all say they will produce about the same power so around 300-320bhp.

Decisions decisions....

Go with what you know or majority recommendations. The big players in the vw group tuning field have been apr or revo for a long time now. For me either box or remap option with my octavia is no go both can easily be detected and I don't and won't ever own the car.

That's exactly what I am thinking, will do Revo or APR i suspect......depends which mapper/company can do me a good deal on the map, exhaust and RR.

I know what you mean, mine is on finance but I will probably but the car or trade it at the end of my PCP. I don't worry about this sorta stuff these days, especially when the same engine is producing the mapped power from the factory, just in a different car!

i have only had the car a week and already fitted a Ramair intake and turbo elbow, removed the chrome badges, ordered the front splitter and side skirts, ordered ODBeleven and paddle shift extenders....now just for the cat back and stage 1 map. Will do downpipe at some point but just cannot justify that amount of money yet!

My boggo standard 245 as you may have read made 302bhp at 5,500rpm and 467NM at 2,700rpm back in March 2018 at AmD Grays in Essex. Economy improved by a significant 10% but that may be because the stage 1 remap suits my mainly motorway commute. They have an onsite rolling road so you get before/after laminated print outs. Standard power was 248bhp and 400NM of torque. I would love you to go there purely to see the comparison between your car and mine. They have done loads of VW GTi's and Audi's but only one Octavia 245. All the best with whatever you decide. It will be 300bhp plus.

Thanks mate. To be honest this was my preferred option, AMD in Essex as I am around that way all the time and I do a lot of motorway miles.

will give them a call tomorrow and have a chat, see if they can it will do me a deal on the map and fitting an exhaust.

Cheers the Boss is Shaun a former racing driver who still does remaps as does Ben both really nice guys and know what they are doing. They do interest free payments over 12 months and I am still paying my £37.49 per month until Feb 2019 LOL for the stage 1 remap.:D

Interest free is the best way to go....why pay in a lump sum when you don't have too!!

i want a cat back as well so guessing my bill will be around £800-£900.

Not my experience but, then over 2 cars I've only brought 5 items but obviously, your single purchase carries more importance

Yeah even my stage 2 mods with them cost me £600 deposit back in October then £205 per month interest free on the balance over 12 months.:inlove:

I have had all my cars mapped on the ECU so not any experience of the boxes.

Tuningbox will always be less powerful than a remap but, unless the OEM wants to spend roughly a grand on internal costs, they won't be detected. Gotta give them a big expensive warranty claim for them to do that kinda investigation.

A few haters are gonna tell you of all sorts of issues they've had, every single one I've asked for further details either has 2nd hand boxes or diesels. 2nd hand boxes are usually for a slightly different year/engine hence, don't work. Diesels don't respond well to tuning boxes through cold weather but, nobody likes to be told to turn down the tune hence, they get all ****ty.

If you want to keep your warranty, get a box, if you ain't worried about your warranty, get a remap, the choice is yours.
