Exhaust fumes in Citigo cab - known problem?

Featured Replies

Hi, got me a brand new Citigo a short while back and it's lovely to drive.  Well happy with it apart from one issue.  Sometimes when I am manoeuvring in a car park or having to work the engine a bit on a hill queue my cab is filling up with exhaust fumes, even more so when the heating is on higher.  It's not from another car as it's always the same smell.  But it's only occasional and not every time, which is going to be very difficult to show/prove to the dealership when I book it in for an examination.  I hate intermittent problems 'cos they don't always show up to the repair man.

So before I do book it in, has anybody else encountered the same problem?  The more information I can gather, the more chance I have of explaining the issue and getting it sorted.

Thanks in anticipation of any answers.

I’ve had it afew times, but only on the real rare occasions - doesn’t really bother me, I like the smell of petrol :D

Thanks for your reply.  Unfortunately, it is not that very occasional petrol smell when a car doesn't start first time and the carburettor gets flooded. I have had that in all cars.  No, this is exhaust I'm pretty sure.  Time to get it booked in and see if I can make it go wrong on the forecourt.  But, thanks again.

Hi,

Only a few times have I smelled exhaust in the car - when holding still, but i think its when the wind blows the exhaust to the air cabin intake - which probably only happens at certain conditions? Not too strong wind, not too weak and with a direction along the car. I mostly smell other cars exhaust. I've experienced it mostly when in dense, slow-moving traffic - where i can smell the exhaust of the car in front of me. Solution: keep distance.

I think the issues is that the cars cabin air-intake draws air from some low point on the car - so what if you have an exhaust leak, such that the leak is close to the cabin air intake?

Cabin air-intake is between bonnet and windscreen. Because it is the best place for it.

Citigo is no better or worse than pretty much any other car for cabin fumes. As Emil says, it draws air in at the usual place at the base of the windscreen, so if you are getting lots of exhaust fumes, you may conceivably have a leak under the bonnet or the bulkhead, probably where there are joints in the pipework. I think it's unlikely on a new car though.

If you turn off the fan, and/or shut off the vent (i.e. move the lever to the 'recirculate' position), does this affect whether you smell exhaust or not? It may shed light on where the exhaust is coming from...
