Recalcitrant Radio, intermittent fault

Featured Replies

The Yeti went in for a service and MOT, it was collected and I said the radio was not working again.

This happened once before and they checked out the radio and charging system, all o.k.

Their driver noted that it did not work on the trip to the dealers workshop. However once it reached the

workshop and was turned on by the technicians it worked perfectly.

My warranty expires this time next month and I would like this problem sorting once and for all, any ideas please?

*When not being used the car has a new C-tek charger connected.

Sorry, can't help with the problem sorting but can't help wondering if you are related to my old House Master.

I recall being similarly described in several end of term reports to my parents.

My father certainly understood the word, even if I didn't!

But could it have meant, "needs a good thrashing once a week"?

It therefore remains an intermittent fault covered under warranty until fixed.

Is water possibly getting into the aerial attachment point?.

Thank you but no leaks,

Battery on charge with C-tek until yesterday AM. After 24hours shows 12V

Fuse checked, ok

The probability seems to be low battery voltage and the radio shut down

by software? circuit.

I am using a new C-tek charger now.

Just stop using the charger...

Turn off and remove the charger.
Leave the battery standing for atleast 3 hours then do a battery test.
If the voltage is less than 11.8v the battery is knackered.

(And to be honest if the battery is showing a floating charge of only 12v after 24 hours I'd say it was knackered anyway)

Not sure if it is connected but my Amundsen radio intermittently switches on okay but there is no display at all - radio or reversing camera. Usually after switching the car off and waiting 20 seconds before restarting the display comes on as normal. It has been doing this since 6 months old but maybe once every couple of months then 3 times in a week.  Skoda main Dealer has looked at it but can’t find anything wrong. Will get them to look at it at again at the 2 year service due in March.

Anyone any ideas???

Sorry the battery was off charge 24hours before being checked, my previous post did not really make that very clear.

Thank you all very much, the battery is now number1 suspect.

What is the best branded replacement?

varta? but I am in france!

Varta have a good reputation.

However a word of warning; following the Governments clamp down on the sale of (any) acid it appears that batteries can no longer be sent, since they contain acid. There have been numerous reports of people having batteries delivered without acid and then not being able to buy any. If buying by mail order I would be closely questioning the seller on what their proceedures are. It may be simpler to find a local supplier.

warrabout gel batteries then?

Please supply any evidence that this is the case, e.g. legislation, government notes, supplier statements etc.

Cos I can't find any

I have heard of 3 people locally who have ordered lead acid batteries. In 2 cases their order has been refused by the supplier due to the new Governmemt Act, and 1 who received a dry battery and was told to take it to another supplier to be filled and fitted. I have also read similar comments on a car FB page.

Note the words I used "It appears"  and "closely question the seller". I'm only passing on what I have heard or read.

This is from one supplier of m/c batteries:
https://www.yuasa.co.uk/2018/08/important-uk-announcement-new-regulations-will-change-the-way-motorcycle-batteries-can-be-sold/

In all my years I've never bought a battery which came with a bottle of acid to "fill it myself". Sealed for life batteries will doubtless be unaffected by the change of regulation, but sellers who supply DIY battery / acid packs will have to change their ways.

I see no mention of batteries there.

The new regulations affect all Yuasa products where acid is supplied in a bottle alongside the battery for the customer to self-activate. It also affects separate electrolyte bottles.

EPP licencing is not required for batteries that are supplied with the acid already inside. These are exempt as a filled battery is classified as ‘specific object’.

The exemption is provided by new paragraph 2 (9) (b) of the Poisons Act 1972:

A substance or mixture is excluded if … it is contained in a specific object.

My radio ran for 15 min then stopped again, booked into dealers again.

If this was when the ignition was off it sounds like normal behaviour, especially if the battery is old.

How long does it say the radio should run before turning off with ignition off in the hand book ?

with no ignition live my Amundsen+ runs for 30mins approx. before shutting down, that figure is stated somewhere in the h/book, can't find mine currently!

Edited by Frenchtone

Agree about the 30 minutes, BUT there is also a system that senses the battery voltage and if it thinks it is too low will shut it down sooner. Also turns off things like interior and boot lights.

Battery checked and monitored, I arrived at 8.00 and left at 11.00, while I was there the radio did not come on

except for a slight greying instead of black on the screen. The techs agree it is at fault but it needs to be videoed

and date stamped to show it not working! I will be looking at a replacement car, a Ford at this rate.
