Super annoying (and maybe expensive)! Been enjoying my 2014 Superb for 2 years. 6-speed DSG always been smooth and great.

Had the oil changed and now only 71,000 on the clock and never towed or driven hard.

 

Then last night, when cruising  along in 6th, it suddenly started changing wildly and the people behind me almost drive into the back of me.

 

Call the AA, they sent some local garage who turned up, not even having any diagnostic kit and said they could only tow and do no more.

 

Got the car to my local garage. VCDS scan shown below.

The garage also scanned it and came up with the same thing, except their equipment added 'Short to Earth' in the description, which I think is important info.

 

Just wondering if anyone ever had this and what it turned out to be.

 

It really did not feel like a mechanical issue. It was sudden and crazy (and is intermittent). The garage is going to send away the Mechatronic unit. It sound like big bucks if Mechatronic or Gearbox need replacing. Also wondering about the ECU which controls the Mechatronic unit.

 

The Ross Tech VCDS web site has some strange possible causes of this error and most sound mechanical. But the other diagnostic kit did report 'Short to Earth' which I think sounds a lot more likely.

The transmission will have a bunch of sensors to monitor where everything is inside there. It's possible one of those is acting up.

 

I'd be inclined to have a gearbox specialist familiar with the DSG look at it before doing anything else.

good luck, hope they find something simple and not too expensive.

Well,  after 5+ weeks, I have an answer and a solution! Lucky I borrowed a car from work / and a free courtesy car to keep me on the road.

 

So, a very long story.

 

My local independent garage found the same fault as my VCDS, but could not trace the fault itself.

On the advice of two separate DSG gearbox specialists, they took off the mechatronic unit and posted it to one and then the other. Both did benchtop tests, but found no fault. All the while I was running up a big test bill.

So, then the car back together, fault still present. So the car was put on a transporter and sent off to the gearbox specialists.

They also could not trace the exact fault, so gave me the stark choice of a new mechatronic unit £2,000+ fitting, new clutch and gearbox refurbish £2,000. Once you total all the investigation is was £4,500 (half the value of the car). I had to swallow it as the scrap value of the car was not high enough for any other option.

 

Well, during the gearbox refurbishment they found  on re-assembling the gearbox  that a speed sensor and toothed pick up were running in line and were in fact loose and touching each other. So gearbox people fitted a new sensor and re-aligned the toothed wheel, replace the clutch pack and refitted the gearbox using  existing mechatronic unit, carried a re-learn. 

 

Problem was resolved and no need for a replacement mechatronic. My local garage swallowed all the investigation charges and transport and courtesy car. In the end, I still have a bill of £2,000, but thankfully not £4,000+.

 

This seemed to be a new DSG issue which the gearbox guys told me they have had a lot of other gearbox guys asking them about, since they posted on other forums. Bad it had to happen to me, but car is now very smooth again and drivable!!!
