Skoda Superb 2019 hybrid

Featured Replies

All wheel drive, combined 250bhp and using a 1.5 tsi engine for the hybrid? Not sure how accurate that is from earlier reports right?

  • 3 weeks later...

The only reason to get one is for the tax breaks if you have a company car.

Over its life the 2.0 D will do far less harm to the environment or us and be cheaper to run.

Personally, I can think of a few reasons for me to own a hybrid and none involve tax breaks or being cheaper to run.

Me too. If car can do 50km on battery that's so big plus... Its quieter and makes ride quality better in long run. It can also preserve brakes in town not to mention it stores energy that would be wasted by stopping into batteries. Most hybrids also run 48v which makes starting car softer/easier. The start/stop is better on hybrids too...

Not all is just about environment/tax.

There are downsides though, like maintenance costs, heavier car (worse handling, more fuel consumption on highway), batteries blowing up/catching fire, pricier in the start, etc...

On the subject of electric cars generally - especially all electric but also plug in hybrids - what the hell are the running costs going to be once the government realise they have lost billions in fuel duty and tax?  They are going to have to do something to get the money back as the VAT on electricity won't even begin to make up for the losses. Any comparisons of costs at the moment are meaningless looking towards the future!

But - they'll look pretty silly if they introduce a charge (a higher VED?) on electric cars in these 'green' days!

Generally on weekdays I do two or three 2 mile runs a day and at weekends longer runs of up to 600 miles each way fully loaded across Europe so a hybrid make a lot of sense for me.

At the moment I have a 280 which is great for the long runs but a bit of a waste around town!

The main novelty for the Skoda Superb will be the arrival of the plug-in hybrid version. The car will mount a 1.5 hp 150 combined with an electric motor from a hundred hp for about 250 hp overall. The car will have a range of 60-70 km with zero emissions. Relevant performance with about 225-230 km / h top speed and 7 seconds for 0-100.

The hybrid version of the Skoda Superb will have all-wheel drive as standard. On the Superb range there will be manual 6-speed automatic versions with double clutch and 7-speed DSG. Front and full wheel drive expected. There are also many standard ADAS to keep up with the times. The price of the new Skoda Superb should start from around 27,500 euros, the hybrid will have an indicative base price of 47,000 euros. Sales since summer 2019.

All sounds great (except for the price :) ) but doesn't it seem a bit strange that its so different/better than the Passat GTE? Normally its the other way round...

I’m sure it will save you at least a fiver a week in fuel and save the planet...

Its too expensive..

So who in their right mind would pay an extra €20k just so you can drive 40 miles on the batteries alone?

When majority of cars goes electric, then where the electricity comes from? We allready hit power usage peaks. As you know, fast charging takes lot of power and for example charging hunday kona with home electricity takes ~30 hours...

Most electricity that is produced during the night is wasted, this is the ideal time to be charging a car for most people.

By by to cheap electricity at night times :)

More than likely, however consider this:

A 40 kWh car battery (new Nissan Leaf) will cost £6 to fully charge from flat (they are never ‘flat’) @ 15p per KW (most EV owners will pay nowhere near that)

This will still do 100 miles if you ‘drive it like you stole it’ with the heating on full during the winter (so taking worst case scenario with everything.

So now consider petrol / diesel in the UK isn’t far short of £6 per gallon and all of a sudden you have got a car capable of the equivalent of 100 MPG and instant acceleration from standstill.

So even when / if the cheap nightime electricity goes, your running costs are still going to halve.

Until they find a way to recoup fuel duty and VAT when the government deficit grows...

Hate to see the state of UK roads when all these overweight vehicles start using them. The potholes Ive encountered on the M1 recently are horrendous...

That’s a given, just like they pushed diesel as being green, and now are doing the same again with petrol.

How do you "waste" electricity?

I take it you don’t have kids then? :giggle:

Maybe waste was the wrong word, but more electricity is produced at night then there is a demand for, which is why cheap night time rates came in, so people are encouraged to put the washing machine, dishwasher, charge cars etc on whilst you sleep, this in turn lessens the demand during the daytime.

Simply you close off generators which could do more energy. Over night they have to reduce the amount of water that flows through generators because there is simply not enough consumption. Energy is not really stored its generated in amounts of consumption. In my country we don't use much energy, we sell most to other countries (I know that for a fact, my ex's father was working in Hydro Plant and we visited a lot so learned a lot about how these things work).

Anyway if all cars run electric we'll still be able to make energy. That's really small issue... Batteries and chargers are the issue.

And then you get a visit from the fire safety people who ask you not to put the washing machine, dishwasher, phone charger on overnight....

Great isn’t it?
