Confused on spec! (folding mirrors)

Featured Replies

Hi, new guy, looking to spec an Octavia VRS (not a Challenge).

I'm getting thoroughly confused on the spec. I definitely want (and need) electrically folding mirrors.

The standard spec says Electrically adjustable, heated & foldable mirrors with boarding spots

And in the options there is Electrically adjustable, heated, folding, auto-dimming door mirrors. (£210)

So is the only difference that for £210 I get auto-dimming? And as standard they electrically fold?

Being picky with wording, it says " Electrically adjustable" (which could just be the angle of the glass is electrically adjustable ), and then it says "foldable" (which could just be "able to be folded manually", and not necessarily electrically).

Can anyone definitively tell me if the standard car has electrically folding mirrors? I would be most grateful! Thanks.

  • Welcome!   This has cropped up previously and is indeed manually "foldable" as standard.  The £210 is for the electrically "folding" mirrors.  Very sneaky.

  • AFAIK auto-dip only operates correctly with memory seats (as the memory is also used to hold the mirror position).   I coded auto-dip and found the same as you so I never use it now.

Welcome!

Update: Had obviously posted wrong answer. Have deleted my original reply. You're right, specs throughout VWgroup are confusing at best.

What confused me is spec's on 'S' and 'SE' trim mention the mirrors are electrically adjustable and heated.  There is no mention whatsoever if they fold - electrically or manually.

As you say, specs on other models say electrically adjustable, heated and foldable with boarding spots.  Brouchure mentions they're foldable on higher grade models but not on lesser?   If I was forced in to a bet, I'd have put money on the latter description as meaning electrically foldable.  Obviously I'd have lost that bet if the topic has already been discussed.

I passed on a 3 series, specifically because those cars do not come with folding mirrors and very few people seem to select it as an option. Totally agree withMarkG82 below, dipping rear door mirrors are better, but would I pay £175 or £200 for them?  I wouldn't have paid £17.50 for them.

Update:

The electric folding / dimming mirrors are worth the money, especially if you do a fair bit of night driving, it's more relaxing as they effectively remove the glare of Halogen & LED or badly adjusted headlights. They were £175 in 2015 but one of the best options I chose.

Thanks. But, ahhhgghhh, even above you are not in agreement!! (lol!)

In the spec sheet, specifically under VRS, it says electrically adjustable, heated & foldable mirrors with boarding spots, but it seems that no-one really know what that means!!

In offer for my car it says all you've mentioned PLUS auto-dimming PLUS memory (for 169kW version, like this in brackets).

Don't miss auto-dimming feature. Its worth the money, you'll sense it every night ride.

Well, having just taken delivery of a new VRS, I can confirm that the 'standard' mirrors are electrically adjustable, are electrically heated and do fold (manually). If you want electrically folding and dimming mirrors it would appear that's extra!!!!

Electric  folding/auto dip when selecting reverse gear and heated are only standard if you order leather heated seats

Thanks Maggle. I guess it looks like I need to factory order then.... so a 12-14 week wait for the day, vs a 3-4 week wait for a pre-build (without folding mirrors).

Auto-dip would be useful!!! Can I get that?

nb, no leather seat option on the VRS.

I stand corrected, no leather seat option.

My 245 Vrs Challenge Edition on order, has eletric fronts seats with electric folding mirrors, mirror dip and heated mirrors

You will have to pay extra for electrically folding mirrors when you lock the car (standard on my 2017 Vrs245 Special Edition). If the mirror switch position is in the L (for left mirror) postion before selecting reverse it will automatically dip down to avoid any kerb rash. Hope this clears up your 2 questions.

I've coded mine to auto dip on reverse even though they are the basic manually folding ones :-)

I had this done on my Ex 63 plate Vrs TDi but the mirror only dipped slightly and sometimes never went back to its normal position when selecting first gear, sometimes it never even attempted to move.   Had a mind of its own

As said - the distinction between "foldable" (i.e by hand) and "folding" (i.e. electrically) is one that has caused much confusion (and debate!) on here before.

and "adjustable" just means you can change the direction the mirror is pointing, not the actual casing

Sorry should have mentioned the 245 Special has 3 position electric heated memory seats (forget how spoilt I am, sorry).:D

Factory order it is then, thanks everyone! (trouble is, I'll then go to town on other options...)

Does anyone know factory lead times on VRS petrol manual estates?

Seems to be about 13 weeks at the moment but probably 3 years after 29th March 2019 due to impending doom and gloom brigade (joking about the 3 years BTW).:inlove:

There might not be a very long built time but a no deal Brexit might put a 10 or 20% levy on imported cars. I have signed up for a new 245 Challenge Edition, ( Due Early May ) paid my deposit but I have a get out clause with the dealer ( in writing ) that if the levy is applied I can cancel my order and have my deposit back or if needed pay the extra

I have a new standard 245 - they are NOT electrically folding.

Also does not have boarding spots.

I never even noticed one said foldable and the other said folding!!! I guess that's the difference then, but really not clear at all.

Thanks - very helpful and definitive as you actually have one!

A very good point... I'll make sure I do the same (as I dare say they have some std clause that says I have to cough up for it otherwise).

Thanks for everyone's help. As suspected, the dealer was wrong!! They said the only difference was that the £210 option also included auto-dimming. Glad I checked/asked (as i was fairly sure they'd got it wrong).

Just having a look at Autotrader and see several 2019 Vrs 245's for sale.  And as you can see from pics, no electric folding mirrors as std.

No wonder SashaGrace keeps updating her car from it's poverty stricken std spec :D

May have said this before - went to look at a 3 series touring b4 opting for my Octavia -  ex-BMW management car, several thousand on the clock, loads of extras but they hadn't specified electric folding mirrors. I questioned that decision with the salesman (a few other basics missing from the car that aren't even on BMW's options list). It was the same salesmen whom I'd bought my BMW's from before, and who walked with a limp. He just slapped the drivers door mirror with his hand and said there you go, as easy as that.  I replied "Did you wear your knee out Danny with constantly walking round to the passengers side to slap that mirror shut?".

Well I thought it was quite witty if he didn't. :D
