Android equivalent to Columbus RNS510

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my 2014 Rapid Spacebacks Swing radio to a better system. After looking on here, I originally swayed towards the Amundsen/Columbus upgrade but I kept finding Android head units from various sources. A new 3rd party unit seems to be cheaper than a 2nd hand Amundsen/Columbus, and appear to be entirely "plug and play", as opposed to 2nd hand units needing security codes.

Someone recommended Audio Tech Direct as a decent 3rd party upgrade, and someone else recommended Android Eonon.

My question is, what are the compatibilities of 3rd-party head units with Maxidot/MFD? Are there any shortfalls to look out for with 3rd party units?

Seen a few reviews that state some work (partial or completely) and some don't. Keen to keep all my car's functions on Maxidot (phone, Bluetooth, audio etc) as they are useful.

What are people experiences with these units?

Thanks,

my '10 Superb Eleg keeps the Maxidot functions apart from the Nav display which i never use anyway so no issue for me.

the display for rear sensors / climate / door opening is smaller than on the Columbus, not sure if your Swing has that anyway?

for DAB you will probably need to add the module to the unit , some do use the original Aerial if fitted, do your due diligence and ask the suppliers.

mine came with Sygic nav installed but obviously being Android there is a choice of software. I don't like Google Maps TBH and nothing is as simple as using a dedicated Nav,

Waze i tried and nearly threw up when i saw the childish emoji's on there

no unit will be do everything that people want / expect, the Columbus in mine wouldn't connect to OH's newer phone - £100 to swap out the BT module - maps were way out of date so another cost to update  and take a look on this forum at the number of threads regarding those issues....no USB input either, new unit has 2 spare, unit also came with Sygic on a 16gb SD card so enough room for my music.

try and decide what are your priorities and work from that, the unit is only a big Android phone without having to keep it charged
