Mpg

Recommended Posts

Hi all I have just bought a 2011 superb  estate 2litre diesel 170bhp 93000 miles mpg seems very low at 39mpg and that's me changing gears early at just under 15 on the rev counter what kind of mpg is every one else getting around town driving and what more can I do to get better mpg thanks

I have a 170 DSG and do mostly urban driving. My average since I bought the car is around 8.1 l/100 km(~35 mpg) so your 39 doesn't sound too bad. Remember the Superb is a big heavy car so it's never going to be great in town where you're accelerating and decelerating all the time.

When you say changing up at under 15 when accelerating, do you mean 1500rpm?

To be honest I don't think the engine, even a diesel, will be very efficient at those low revs. It would only just be getting into its stride at 1500rpm and the next gear would take it down to close to 1000rpm (?) where you would have it labouring on a larger throttle.  You would be better off using slightly higher revs with less throttle to get better economy.

It has worked for a me a on a couple of non VAG diesels so worth a try.

As Gerry mentioned, 1500 rpm is far to early to be changing up! It's also likely to damage the DMF as they don't like low RPM with high torque - even more so up hills...

You've also not mentioned how long your journeys are. A TDi won't become fully efficient until it's properly warmed up. This can take quite a while depending on ambient temperature and how you're driving.

Personally, I try and keep my engine above 1500 rpm unless there is practically no load on the engine. As soon as I want to accelerate or go up an incline, I change down to keep the RPM above 1500 again.

Funnily enough, around 1500 rpm is where the DSG changes up on that engine in D mode. But yeah, agreed on the warmup, particularly since these engines burn extra fuel during warmup to get everything up to temperature as fast as possible.

Driving distance is around 20 mins long all short jounnerys at the start I was change at 2000 but it just eats diesel at that and if am going up hill I change just after 2000 to make sure it's ready for the next gear

What kind of mpg would use be getting

Like I said up top, I'm doing the same sort of driving as you and getting mid 30s in old money. If you're actually getting 39 mpg, you're doing about as well as you could possibly do: there's very little room to do better.

Out of curiosity, are you getting the economy figure from the MFD on the car, or calculating it based on brim-to-brim mileage? The MFD usually reads about 15 % better than you're actually getting.

Am getting this from the MFD or as I call it money for diesil Lol

You need to do a few brim to brim checks - with my previous Superb I 1.9pd the "MFD" was rather pessimistic. When it did 50mpg brim to brim the "MFD" showed 46mpg.

Strangely the MFD seems to be fairly accurate on my latest petrol Superb.

How many miles are you getting out of a tank full of diesel?

If you want to check real mpg, you'd be safe to let it go much lower.

I fill mine when the warning chimes off. Filling it up to the brim then takes 48 to 50 litres.  It a 60 (ish) litre fuel tank, so there's a hefty enough reserve left.

It's near half now so I'll just let it empty and see Many miles I get out of it

If you haven't recorded the odometer reading at the start of the tank you're only going to be guessing. Brim it, record the odometer and then the amount of fuel it takes to brim it the next time is how much you used during that tank.

Heh - I've seen the gauge down at the bottom and still only managed to fit in about 54-55 l. There's a calibration process that can be done but I'd need a few jerrycans to do it, so couldn't be bothered.

@meeks78

Chip or remap.

From time to time give it some beans ;)

Install Fuelio app - or something similar - to record fuel and other expenses.

Install DPF VAG (free) app to monitor regens - higher idle revs, fan running, smell of burn rubber at the back of the car.

Its worth thinking about the extra weight of a full tank of fuel, and the effect THAT has on MPG. Its fine occasionally if you want to check "brim to brim" consumption, otherwise its making things worse.

I've never really noticed any real difference with mine - tank full or empty. I have however noticed a difference when the car is full of people and luggage - I think the petrol is more sensitive to this.

I've got a 170TDi DSG with 189,000 miles on it.

I get 38mpg around town, and overall average town/motorway (measured brim to brim) is 40.7.

On my journeys to and from London, I find that I get around 44mpg average. Highest I've ever seen was 48.2mpg.

Driving around where I live is not good, as it's up hill and down dale for lots of the time.

MFD was way off initially, showing about 5mpg higher than actual. Have re-calibrated it now with VCDS and it's within +/- 1mpg now, depending on driving conditions.

My car has the emissions fix, so I'm pretty sure it could be better with a rollback of the software.

I also found that having the car TerraCleaned helped a lot with mpg, as it was significantly worse before.

I have the same drivetrain and haven't seen any change in economy since the update was done in January.
