Headlight advice, rhd to lhd

Featured Replies

Hi,

First Post.

Owner of a 2013 yeti elegance.

Bought in UK and taken to France so now in the process of registering and doing the CT.

I have run into an expensive problem!

The centre won't accept stickers and the travel mode won't suffice.

So I need LHD lights.

I think the OEM is 5l1941017

However I'm worried that since they are xenon lights with all the movement then a certain light is needed.

I have found the following on ebay Germany

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.de%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F292173193475

Around 100e per corner is ok I guess but a similar light specifying xenon is 400e!

If I buy one advertised as h4/h7 will it be as simple as putting the required bulbs in? Or due to all the moving parts will that not work?

My intention would be to use cheap headlights to pass CT then replace with Xenon and travel mode until next test.

Anyone imported a UK model and any advice on all this?

Is it reasonable easy to replace the headlights?

Thanks

Stephen

Ps love the car, had it a year but its costing me! Had to replace timing belt and have the software update and associated egr issues

You need LHD xenon headlights. Halogen will not work correctly and throw all sorts of faults.

As above, you need LHD xenon headlights. There is a good chance the halogen and xenon headlights use different connectors (10 pin vs 14 pin) so you probably couldn't even plug them in.

You'd also need to recode the AFS controller to let it know it's LHD :)

Thanks for the replies.

I guess I'm stuck with paying the cash.

Been quoted 1000 with skoda main dealer. It appears using eurolites stickers or the maxidot will pass the ct test :-(

Already had timing belt done on last service and pending egr replacement at 1000e+!

Not sure about your year of Yeti, but in ours (2017MY) there is an option in Maxidot to set the headlights for RH traffic (LHD)

Have you checked?

Hope it helps

That setting does not set them to LHD, all it does is stop the kick-up in the light pattern.

According to the new law in French CT then if it flattens the beam as this does, it should pass! But I'll throw another 100e and try one more garage who may accept the travel mode and /or stickers!

It doesn't even do that...

It just points the headlights down and to the right slightly to avoid glare and disables the bending/dynamic cornering ability. On a LHD car it would be to the left instead.

If the car doesn't have bending/dynamic cornering ability, it'll just move the headlights down, there are plenty of clips on youtube showing this behaviour.

There is no hardware in the headlight that can flatten the beam. Feel free to check when it's dark by pointing the headlights at a wall and activating tourist mode, you'll see it only moves where the headlight are pointing and retains the RHD ECE flick up.

The stickers aren't suitable as the xenon projector moves. Sure, you can apply the sticker in the 'right' position but as soon as you're moving, it'll often be in the 'wrong' position

That's not to say a garage won't pass it, only that they probably shouldn't!

Thanks, that's very helpful albeit not the information I would of liked :-)

With having it here in France and recently doing a major service and timing belt I'm kinda stuck with it now.

I'll gamble another 100e on a ct with stickers and prepare myself for another 1000 for lights :-(

The CT law has not changed to my knowledge, as long as the beam cut off line does not go above the permitted horizontal and kick up line on their machine (the permitted kick up would be on the right here in France) and it is not so low as to go under the bottom line then the headlights will pass.

With carefull adjustment you will probably be able to find a compromise for the test, at worst you will probably only get an advisory that does not require a contra visite.

Until this Octavia I had always modified the headlight beams by rotating the H4 bulbs to give a flattened off horizontal beam cut off pattern. Then when I finally had the money after 10 years I bought new LHD headlights for my MK1 and the difference was staggering, I had not realised how much the light output had reduced due to tarnished reflectors and opacity of the clear lenses, neither of which were visible to the naked eye until they were put side to side and lit up.

For this MK2 I bought new lights from Ebay.de very cheaply but they were not HID, they are now thanks to AliExpress!

have you looked at ebay .it (Italy) I bought 2 aftermarket units for my pre fl machine, I accept not xenon but the price per unit was around 120€ each(about 50% of genuine price), local garage, non franchise, but specialising in VW Audi Skoda, Seat products fitted em as part of  a major service, cost about 60 - 70 €

In finistere , stickers do not work, the literature is definite on that point. It would be difficult to position the stickers as ther eare no mould lines to follow!
