What is the UK's best SUV for under £25 k

Featured Replies

@vrskeith

If buying one of these 3 now as a keeper it is the 4 cylinder 2.0l petrol Mazda i would rather still own after 5 years and not a VW Group 3 cylinder 1.0 TSI.

If renting one for 3 years & handing back while still in Manufacturers Warranty then maybe it would be a VW, SEAT, Skoda or Audi that would be the choice.

  • Best is probably an Octavia as you don't need 4x4, and if you did an Octavia scout. 99% of SUV ownership is for fashion/poser reasons, most do nothing more challenging than mount a kerb at little prin

  • Hard to look past SWMBO Karoq SEL was £23,500 with the discount. Great allrounder wouldn't swap it after 16 months for anything currently on sale.

  • 2 Dacia Dusters for on-road, and a Suzuki SJ413 for when you actually need off-road?

MG option ???

I have seen a couple of the MGZS's now and was surprised at how acceptable they looked. To me anyway.

First one i had to look hard to see what it was.

Is 'What Car' lining up the car that will be the What Car Best Small SUV 2020?

Odd the What car motoring journalist should speak about being 40 mm (4 cm) higher than in a Scala then say that he / they have been driving the 10 mm lower versions.  Or is the basic suspension 50mm different.

So had he all that extra height / view from an extra 30mm or 40mm?

Who ever knows where they get heights to roof, to roof rails, then clearance to floor.   There is under body protection on some so that changes clearance, maybe lower but protection against speed bumps...

Easy in easy out might be what matters.

Short arSes might pump up seats and still see out the screen OK, tall people drop them & slide them back so than can drive & see out the top of the screen.

It's hard to tell from the pictures but it would appear Skoda has mounted the rear view mirror super low again.  If other Skoda models are anything to go by, long ar$es like me may have to sit far lower than is comfortable just to get an unobstructed view through the windscreen.  Little point in owning a 30mm/40mm/50mm higher Crossover/SUV.

We will need to sit in and see, and right hand drive ones before it is clear how the controls are for the right handed in a right hand drive car,

and right handed on UK roads.

Best is probably an Octavia as you don't need 4x4, and if you did an Octavia scout. 99% of SUV ownership is for fashion/poser reasons, most do nothing more challenging than mount a kerb at little princesses school gate. They're no more spacious, they're less economical. Only advantages are marginally better ground clearance, and easier to get in and out of you have mobility issues.

PS. I'm being deliberately controversial 🙂

@amwphotos You are dead right.

& You will need to be older or infirm before you ever understand that an Octavia is a car, be it FWD or Haldex.

There are plenty as taxis but really many people can not get in or out an Octavia easily.

Plenty so called SUV's are not that high a seating position or that much easier to get in, but it seems to be the stupid 'class' tall roof cars are getting.

Skoda Superb's are a no no for me, pretty little foot room and wide sills as i have tried them and never wanted to drive one.

I found Yeti's much the same, OK once in, and i was not the only one that found them awkward to get out of.

Lots has to do with sill height in cars, floor to sill, floor to seat base.
