Spare wheel size

Recommended Posts

I know we’ve covered this one before, but I can’t find it.

I had my 220 L&K in for a service earlier in the week. One of the issues raised was that my can of puncture gunk was going to expire in the next year. I took this as an opportunity to enquire about getting a proper spare wheel for the car as I’ve never been happy with just the gunk and the inflator thing.

I went to collect it today and I was surprised that it was a full size steel wheel rather than a space saver, but a bit concerned that it was only 16”. I thought 16” was too small for the 220 L&Ks and that they would not clear the brakes. I asked the parts guy and he was sure it would but I’d like to be certain before I find myself at the side of the road with a puncture.

Simple way to be sure would have been for the guy to go try fit the spare or you to.

You still could do that.  You had best check you can get all wheel bolt loose with the tools you have, and check the tyre pressures, set them and reset the TPMS anyway.

Yes, I could do that, but it’s a hassle I could do without on a hot day if someone here already knows the answer. Even though the wheel is full size, I notice the tyre is still limited to 50mph if that makes a difference.

The tyre might well be full size and H speed rated.  But it would not match the size of the 3 tyres on the car when on as a 'Temporary spare'.

It is near the same rolling circumference and will fit over the front brakes. (& the rears.)

But you need to drive remembering if fitted that it is a different brand, compound, width, weight, and on a steel rim. ie Not a Full Size Wheel as the car sits on now.

If you get a TPMS warning of a puncture and fit the 'Spare' then reset the TPMS when driving at the reduced speed to a repair place.

It’s a 205/55 R16 fitted to mine.

I’m sure I recall a big thread on here about winter tyres and how those fitted on 16” wheels would not fit on the higher performance models because of the larger brake calipers.

So what size should they have got me then? Do they do a 17” version? If a buyer of a 220 or 280 Superb specifies the spare wheel option, what do they actually get from new?

diameter comparison to 215/55r17 and 225/55r17:
205/55r16 _ -5.3% _ -6.7%, this huge size difference cancels usage of cruise control
205/65r16 _ +0.8% _ -0.7%, not tested yet

and with 125/70r18 problem is exactly same

-5.3% of 215/55r17

-6.7% of 225/55r17

The 280 Superb gets 17" spare because it has bigger 345mm brakes.

The 220 gets 16" spare because it has 312mm brakes.

My 220 comes with a 16" full size spare tyre, however still different to the 19s fitted on my car.

So hence a temporary spare it is.

I have a 2016 L & K and ordered a spare when I ordered the car (£100.00) and it is an 18inch get you home skinny tyre complete with Jack, wheel brace, wheel wedge and a locking key, plus a little gadget for removing the plastic wheel nut covers.

Hope that helps

Is it not a case of it having to be fitted to the rear is it? Ie. Front tyre punctures, pop the spare on the rear, then move the original rear to the front position?

My previous Hondas with bigger front brakes had this requirement. Ideal of it is hosing down with rain at the side of a road!

Or it's incorrect as previously mentioned.

That sounds more promising then.

I must admit that while I was out watering some new grass I’ve laid yesterday evening I was looking at the brakes through the 18” alloys and there did appear to be far more than one inch clearance from the rim each side. Maybe I will get the new wheel out later and give it a test fit.

For those interested, my Skoda dealer did the wheel and the accessory set (jack etc.) for £172.

at the risk of further complicating this......what about a spare for a car with 19" wheels? My Sportline 4x4 190 only has the goop and I want to get a spare instead - looks like it will run a 16 but wonder if its a good choice? Reading about diff issues with different size wheels I'm also wondering how you do this with a 4x4? I guess putting it on the rear is still better given it probably wont be driven through those wheels most of the time in most conditions at a reasonable speed etc etc?

Actually, on the ŠKODA Superb 206TSI 4x4 it has the following Spare Tyre (18inch, not 17inch):

Continental T125/70R18 99M CST 17

Sorry, my bad - I thought the 280 got 17" spares.

18" it is then :)

thanks for clarifying.

there are two positions!
1.

size of disc:
18" comes only for 280ps 4x4 and 16" for all other models
even you have smallest it isn't big problem -
cause it can be installed on the rear axle,
just extra screwing if damaged front one

2.

size of tire:
stock 205/55r16 and 125/70r18 definitely can't be named as "Full size"

Not in my case. Factory ordered spare and I got R18, as per my post further up

I don't trust the goop and fancy getting a spare, either steel/alloy or spacesaver. A couple of people I asked said they are like rocking horse ****. Any recommendations in the Yorkshire region to try? Currently on 235 45 r18

Take a look on eBay, there's a fair few for <£50.  A brand new one in Donny which will fit, though you'll have to find a tool kit:

I've seen them going for ~£100 on eBay for the wheel and the toolkit.

A very quick search and I found this:
