Without looking it up probably in the top 3,4 sellers?

Trek I think get used a lot as hire bikes?

More Q's than answers  🙄

yeah, i spose its that thing of "best seller" doesnt necessarily mean a best product, just that lots of people buy them.

the Trek Roscoe 7 looks a decent spec and is in/around max budget, but no room really to add an upgrade for a while.

trek's are consistent and reliable I've got a old 4700 that I use as an xc it's covered thousands of miles and still runs sweet.

you'll probably get a bit more for your money on a lesser known brand but it's a decent spec which will serve well

Trek seem to have a pretty stable reliability and quality record. Giant ships still be the largest manufacturer and design and make some very good and solid bikes and frames.
Vitus seems to be the one I’d be cautious of. There are a high number of complaints online from various forums and groups showing broken rear triangles, that the company will not stand over or replace in a lot of instances. To the extent people call them Breakus or snapus.

hmm carbon or alu frames? I've not read anything but if it's carbon then it does happen,  at all levels of bike..i've seen  6K carbon bikes broken.

2 people i know have Vitus bikes and the build seemed top notch to me and they've not reported any issues, but like anything nobody really goes online to say how good the bike is, only reporting the issues they're having so imo the data is always a little skewed

okay, idens the net a smidge at least, may have more luck getting a trek or giant. there is just no stock of anything available anywhere! even halfords dont seem to have any voodoos in the sth end of the country..

told you Mac....Budget creep  :giggle:      ( but can mean no upgrades needed, just pass it by the Significant Other first :D )

okay....

so ive made a wishlist spreadsheet of my current top 4.

the Talon 0 is the cheapest, Shimano gearing but an own brand fork and only one non - shimano brakes.

the Canyon 7 and Lapierre  are same price, but spec on lapierre has SRAM on the shifters, but Shimano on the gearing? narrower tyres on both. more travel on the Judy Fork, but both models seem about level pegging reviews wise. need to check what the difference is on the brakes.

and finally...

Roscoe 7... most expensive, fattest tyres if i go 27.5". Judy Fork, Shimano brakes (need to check the difference to the others too) and SRAM  gearing the same as the Canyon 7.

i also like the shape of this one and the orange colour option is pretty funky.

the final step is.. see what my local bike shops have from the above and try them out. then see what the cost becomes. (id like to support my local business if i can, but if its becomes a major markup then ill order direct)

i wouldnt get too hung up on brakes...all decent enough, MT400 is atouch better than MT200 but more than capable, i've got Tektro on mine..no issues.

the Lapierre brake spec you've seen is the rotor spec, MT200 on it

the Judy forks are probably the better options with the 120mm

the Roscoe and Canyon 7 both have dropper posts which is a bonus

for me if i lived out your way and the weather i'd prefer a threaded BB (Bottom Bracket), easier to replace than a Pressfit which have a reputation for creaking if not installed correctly, not adeal breaker but something to bear in mind?

Roscoe has threaded BB, the others seem to be Pressfit, the Giant i can't pin down but as the spec just says cartridge...

for me the Roscoe appears to be favourite, Lapierre and Canyon not much between them and the Giant just not quite there, but TBH any of them are more than capable...stock will be the issue

well.... thats my order of preference too 😁

totally agree re; bottom bracket my first one creaked after 400 miles and had to be replaced can't change to a threaded due to frame stiffening in BB so i'd go threaded if you can, but there getting harder to find on lower spec bikes.

one thing to consider is do you really need + sized tyres as the trek is running 40mm rims with 2.8 they do feel quite heavy and if you're doing a lot of climbing could be quite noticeable over say a 2.4 with a i30 rim

also if go with the i40 you're kinda stuck using +sized tyres

the BB wasnt really on my radar tbh!

so thats probably a more important issue than the brakes potentially, if its gonna be way harder change if needed

Yes, agree with olduns about not being too hung up about the brakes manufacturer.

I'm sure it's Tektro on my road bike, still pretty good and considering they are cantilever rim brakes.

I'm assuming the ones you are looking at are cabled disc brakes .

Looks like remote lockout (RL) on the giant??? which I like. I removed the rear lockout on mine and adapted it to work on the forks. Unusual preference I think but works better for me.

@Tilt the mt200 and mt400 are hydraulic.

so are the Tektro ones.

Yes, I don't know why I thought they might be cable..... @mac11irl

Hydraulic brakes are excellent......... but the rear can be difficult to bleed due to longer tube.

well, if i want to support my local indy bike shop i cant get the Roscoe, they dont stock Trek. and if i wanted the Talon, id have to order a 2022 model now and hope it arrives in the next 6 months - 40 Talon 1 & 2 arrived last week, some ordered in October last year!

im "looking at a really ****ty time to be honest" apparently.

they stock Orbea too, but i havnt looked at their spec etc, have a feeling it might be outside my budget anyway...

i shall ring the other one (franchised bike shop) and see what they say.

@mac11irlI have an Orbea electric bike, i am not that impressed by the finish.  It rides OK, but it is a so so electric bike.

I have a bike sitting doing nothing that might or might not suit you. A Specialized.

It is a Plus Size Tyre with Hydraulic disc brakes, dropper seat post, but nothing special in the way of forks.

I can provide different pedals or seat to suit what you want if the bike interests you.

£800 is probable a fair price.

I could take it to Cairn Ryan if that would suit.

Or through there i have a Specialized Fat Bike but i doubt that would suit your needs and wants.  It would be about £600.

I will take some pictures.  EDIT can get better ones later.

1x10 Specialised Fuse.  I forget the price i got it or the year but it will only have been ridden maybe 5 times.

The pictures will be in this section.

EDIT.  Bottom, Orbea Flat Bar Gain. (Electric.)

id still have to get at least as far as cairnryan for a pick up...

thats a long way for a bike 🤪

OK, just a thought.   I was thinking more of if you were taking a trip across anytime.

Bikes are in demand and i am sitting with about 5 i no longer ride and and 4 Electrics i do.

nice...n+5, i doff my hat to you or should that be chapeau :D

I’m trying to get tickets for Dublin zoo next month. It’s maybe a long shot, but if needed and some of the crew would push the bike off the boat at this end. I can pick it up and get it at least that far for you when I’m going.

i love the vintage saddles on the bikes George :)

i shall keep this in mind, gonna ring around a few other listed dealers for my short listed bikes and see what falls out. one i tried today only answers 930-1230 and the other was engaged 3 times i rang!
