the mid range acceleration on even a standard 184 diesel is better than a 245 petrol and you dont have to rev the guts out it either.

Yet the 245 is one second quicker to 62 mph than the oil burner

yes , but acceleration when your already moving is more useful.

how many times would  a quicker 0-60 time be needed ?

I know 0–60 times aren't everything but as a baseline measurement of performance:

2.0 TDI (150ps) = 8.3s (my current car)

2.0 TDI VRS (184ps) = 7.9s

2.0 TSI VRS (245ps) = 6.6s

How close do you think I could get to the TSI with a remap, do you think I could get down to 7.3s?

Yep I would say that with a decent remap you could easily get down to 7.3 seconds or even less than 7.  I don't really think it's just shear grunt , it's the way the power is distributed.

I had a Pre FL 230 Manual which was quick, my now 245 Manual only has 15 bhp more but it's a dam sight quicker than the 230, it's like night and day.

The Master Tech at my local dealers quoted the 245 has a different turbo, bigger fuel Injectors and a bigger fuel pump, true or not, or even bull sh17e, I don't really know but the 245 gets the power down a lot smoother than the 230. The fancy front diff also helps.

@vRSWitter depends on if it had dsg or your shifting skill.

I would bet a dsg tdi would be a match for a manual 245.  My dsg tdi 150 with a tuning box is close to my mates 184 manual.  Getting a map next week so fully expect it to be quicker. At least in a straight line.

It's just my shifting skill I'm afraid ... tbh it feels quicker than 8.3s in standard form, but it's hard to get an accurate timing

when your talking 0-60 times, there gets to a point where the only way to go quicker is to have 4 wheel drive.

hence why a golf r is a fair bit quicker than even a remapped gti

Has the OP test driven a 2.0 TSI? It's very smooth and refined even in the VRS.

Giving up my TDI VRS for a 2.0 TSI but going for the SE-L spec, prefering comfort over handling. Just have to wait for the damn thing to be made ...

Nope not driven one yet, Im afraid if I drive one I will want one 😁

Sadly VRS is not available with leather upholstery.

The newest version of the TSI engine has clever variable valve timing that makes it very economical under low load.

Well I decided it wasn't worth it, cost to change + extra fuel + extra tax + extra insurance costs.

Maybe a remap on mine at some point in the future ...

A remap makes a massive difference on that engine.  As standard I think the 184 is pretty poor, I was very underwhelmed; it never feels like it shifts like its stats/spec would suggest.  In many ways I much prefer the 150PS TDI.

I used Revo and was very impressed.  I kept the car for a further 3 years with the remap in place and I didn't have a single issue, not one.  It was a manual too; no clutch slip, nothing.  If I had kept the car longer then I also would have fitted a pedal box too.  I think that would have made it feel more peppy.

In short, I think you'd be happy.  There's also the added bonus of knowing the history of your car.

Yeah, a remap should get you around 30 ish more horsepower. Will bring you thereabouts close to a VRS tdi stock power.

Looks like I'm gonna get a remap. Any suggestions? Revo, Shark, etc.

Got a Revo authorised dealer near me but its quite a lot of Wonga ...

I've had 2 x Revo maps.  Very happy with both.

That's about the going rate for a remap +/- a few £ (well from the reputable tuners anyway).

Always worth asking the agent if they will charge you to return the car to stock/re-flash etc.

I was also very happy with the Revo stage 1 I had on my 220 vRS.  Stark increase in performance and quite addictive 😎
