New tyres are 225/45 R17 OK ?

Featured Replies

Had to get 2 new tyres on the front of my yeti. It originally had 225/50 R17 all round. Now I notice the dealers fitted 2 225/45 R17 on the front instead.

It made my tire pressure monitor go off, I guess to the different rpm of the slightly smaller diameter.

Is this new size ok, or should I reject them ?

I can't find anywhere that 225/45 R17 is an approved size.

You should reject them and insist on the correct tyres be fitted ASAP.

The smaller diameter will affect your speedos accuracy and will likely negatively affect your fuel economy.

On top of that you should never fit non standard tyres as it could invalidate your insurance.

225/45 R17 is an approved size for the 1.2 TSI Yeti with a ground clearance of 155mm.
Should have the same size front and rear though
If the tyre monitor was reset like it should have been it would not have gone off.

Well now I haven't. It's got the original 225/50 R17 on the back.

Take it back and get the correct size tyres fitted. Your dealer is an idiot.

Dealer unbelievable, to fit different size tyres without asking you is just wrong at every level.

Insist on immediate replacement, how much did they charge you?

£300 for the 2

Go back and request they fit the correct size tyres.

Depending on the brand you may have paid more for 45 rather than 50 profile. I suggest you have a look at some of the on-line tyre sellers to get an idea of the relative prices of 45 & 50 profile tyres.

Main thing is to get the dealer to fit you with 50 profile tyres ASAP.

225 50 17 are more expensive than 225 45 17 tyres for the same brand.

Thanks AG Falco

Another query, why did it have 50 profile tyres anyway. Must have given an awful ride compared with standard 55 profile. Can't imagine what 45 profile tyre ride was like, bonejarring at best!

A Yeti doesn't have 55 profile on a 17" wheel.

Or suggest that they give you a really good deal on some new rears if you are happy with the ride and look of the 45s.

When you say dealer, is that a Skoda dealer or tyre dealer. If the former that's disgraceful.

That wouldn't work because the type approved size is 225/50/17, and 45 profile isn't a legal option really.

It can be on the 1.2 depending on ground clearance.

@aubrey

Could you tell the full story.

Have you had the Yeti from new so know it is on the original tyres, and how did you end up saying to the Dealership staff to change a pair of tyres, was the car in for a service or MOT.

?

Did they change the tyres in their workshop or send the car to a Tyre / Exhaust centre?

?

What are the tyres that have been fitted, and what tyre / brand is on the rear and was on the front when the car went in?

As it is they need to get a correct matched size pair on the car at their expense.

PS

The 45 is not an 'illegal option'.  Maybe not advisable, but not a MOT failure, or an Offence you will get a Police Charge / Fine / Points / taken to court with in the UK (England/ Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) and not even a fitment that will VOID your insurance in the UK.

(As long as Correct Speed /Load Ratings, tread etc, and actually tyre sizes that will be Type Approved, which they are.)

As to different front and rear but the same on an axle, that is not illegal.  & the car is not AWD, but even AWD's can have different front and rears. ie Audi on some platforms.

A lot of questions. OK I brought it Skoda used approved. In January this year. Aug 2016 Yeti 1.2 DSG SE L. So it went back to the same Skoda dealership for its 1st mot, using the 1 month early MOT test allowance.

I was surprised an approved vehicle that I had only picked up 5 months earlier would have this issue and was told sorry tyres not part of our first mot guarantee as they are wear and tear items, but that's another story.

Was told it failed on nsf cords showing in tyre tread inter-tread groove. So I was told it needs a new tyre, I said do both fronts then to keep it balanced with tyre age on an axel. I was given a choice of makes and choose Bridgestone. Mot then passed and I collected the vehicle and drove home.

Before tyre change the vehicle had all 4 original factory tyres perrelli 225/50 R17 all round. I don't know where the Skoda dealership got the front tyres changed. I would only assume that they would of done that in their own workshop.

I phoned the dealership this morning and they immediately agreed that's not right at all, they are collecting/returning vehicle currently and are sorting the problem.

As well they should. The technician should be checking that kind of thing if they don't know off hand.

Do let them know how disappointed you are.

One can never assume that the Tyres are fitted at the Main Dealership by their staff, or even that the MOT is carried out there.

I have a local Main Dealership that do neither.

Depends on where your dealer is, and how close an alternative tyre shop is, if they outsource it.

Reading between the lines, my hunch, is they had those 2 in stock and stupidly fitted them, instead of ordering the correct size (which probably wouldn't have arrived to following day

When you pick it up, check all the tyres are correct, and the date code,  (a 4 digit number, 2 digits manufacturing week, second 2 are year) is consistent with your expectations (something like 2-5 months before fitting)

This it true, I have worked in dealers that do both and that do neither.

However the duty of care to the customer stops with the dealer. It is up to them to check that their sublet work is carried out correctly.

Whoops, miss read the data! The point I was making about the ride is still relevant however. Going from 50 to 45 profile must have a damaging impact on ride comfort.

Might do!,

If ride quality was much cope in the first place. Or tyre pressures as you liked.

'Pulling to the left'. " never heard of that before." or " They all do that.".

Mess about a few times then send it to the Audi workshop across the road where they 'All the gear and know who to let use it. & how to use it!'

That's why I spec'd 16" wheels on my Yeti. Smooth ride no jiggles and quieter as well!

Mine was quite different on the winters.

Back end can get a little odd on 17s in my experience.
