Engine replacement

Featured Replies

Hello guys, my 2006 Skoda fabia vrs engine code BLT needs a new engine, I have spotted one on eBay for £395 with 91k miles on it and it comes with a turbo injectors and a diesel pump. Would you recommend buying it as a replacement, my old engine went at 122k because of the cam belt skipping 6 teeth and bent valves and I was advised to get a new engine. Thanks for your help.

It's a gamble.

In principle, that engine should be good for a lot more miles, if serviced well in the past and the future; but its past life may not be well (or at all) documented. Can you even find out if its cambelt has been changed (ever/recently)?

I bought a cheap replacement gearbox recently on the basis that it had 100k fewer miles than the one it was replacing, and got away with it (so far...).  I wouldn't really have been too surprised if I'd got unlucky. Short of buying new or professionally refurbed, you're always taking a risk.

Replacing the cam belt and tensioners is a doddle with the engine out of the car, I'd replace the clutch, flywheel and water pump as well because of the mileage.

Yep. I had a cambelt kit, water pump, flywheel and clutch and a radiator to do recently, quickest and easiest way...
