  • If you think back to when you were young and impoverished and just put a fiver of fuel in at a time, drove till it was about to run out and did the same again.....................   Add infl

  • It's an adaption channel you can change using VCDS or similar: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/VW_Golf_(1K)_Instrument_Cluster#Channe_003:_Consumption_Correction

Hook up VCDS and check live data.

Missed a name

-3.9 sounds to far advanced to me. I’d shoot for - 1.0 at the most.

-1.0 r right a might give that a whirl see what happens also a have a open circuit on cylinder 3 glow plug will that make any difference in driving.

Ie performance and MPG.

Cheers

Not really, but if it’s a faulty plug best get it changed.

Thanks it's just came on yesterday or it went off yesterday.

A was just wondering if that would affect the driving because the power seems to be coming and going like the power is there 1 minute and gone the next thanks

After my 140pd Scouts first cambelt change (Skoda dealer) I could immediately tell the engine wasn’t as smooth as it should be. I had it scanned and the torsion value was at -2.

For it’s 2nd change last year I used my Merc indie (Autoelite in Hull ) one of the techs has an Audi and they have all the VAG equipment. This time the torsion value was set to 0 and the improvement was very noticeable.

Hope this is of help

Mark

Thanks al give it a go when a get the chance cheers.

Checked mine this evening, it was at minus 3.7, will adjust it tomorrow and report back, the mileage I will check both on the MFD and also brim to brim on this tankfull as it still close to the top.

Be nice to squeeze a bit more economy and low down torque, dont mind trading a bit off at high revs.

As a cam belt wears will the figure become more negative?

I chose my words carefully because I am not convinced that a negative value means that the cam timing is retarded, some have reported that when they advance or retard the cam the torsion value goes the other way.

All I will do is try to move as close to zero as possible and if i like how it drives and the economy then nudge it a little further or back if I dont like it.

I can probably answer my own question above by looking at how the value changes when the engine is at high revs.

Another question, can the torsion value be checked and adjusted on the common rail engines?

If so its something to check on my neighbours car.

A don't no about the common rail engine but if u can report back with your findings when you adjust the torsion values would be good thanks.

Will do, have a couple of changeovers to do today so it might be Sunday before I can do it.

Brilliant anytime thanks.

So a have adjusted the torsion value from -3.9 to 0.0 let's see how it goes and al update later.

Did mine today, had to move in the opposite direction to what I thought, a minus value does not mean that the timing is retarded, I had to retard the pulley, the initial advance took it outside of limits but showed zero on VCDS, - BEWARE IF YOU SEE THIS! unlikely you will have got it right first time as you will have overestimated the finesse required, zero value also means out of plausible limits, when you rev the engine you should see the zero move to minus 0.5 if you really are at true zero and it should not throw up further fault codes apart from when you were trying to nail the zero figure, if one does come up after deleting them then you most likely have timed the cam to a false (implausible signal) zero and the car will drive like a dog.

After moving it too far the other way whereby the engine would stall after starting I finally got it to a true zero as witnessed by the revving test, I used a micro paint pen to mark the pulley against the centre boss, its has a Pentel type tip of 0.8mm, a 4 degree difference in timing (= 2° at camshaft) is only the thickness of the line.

On a test drive it feels much more flexible and reactive low down, it will now pull smoothly from 800RPM in 5th gear although the DMF doesn't like it, I cant feel any loss of top end power, have not done a mid range overtake yet, that will be the real test together with fuel economy.

I am really pleased that I did the job, probably most vehicles that have had a cem belt change done by a garage will be out of spec; it makes a big difference.

Did a regular and known 21 mile round trip tonight, urban and cross country, little traffic. Average speed 40mph fuel consumption on MFD was 61.5mpg, better than I usually get but I was probably consciously driving for economy.

Only a couple of tankfulls will show a meaningfull figure.

I like the way it drives though.

So just finished work and the conclusion is torsion set at 0.0 performance is amazing but MPG is not good at all the max a could manage is 37MPG around the doors so a don't no what to do now try adjusting it a little more or what any ideas please.

J.R.

Should a adjust it back to where it was at -3.9 better MPG and bad performance or what do u think cheers

A never did the rev thing because a didn't no about it.

I found after a cambelt change that a small change in the torsion value made a significant difference to the MPG shown on the dash display.... but no noticeable difference at all to the actual MPG measured brim to brim over a few full tanks. For some reason the torsion setting seems to have a big effect on the accuracy of the fuel consumption display.

Worth checking the actual MPG for a while before condemning the current cam torsion setting. You may find its actually OK. If so you can do what I did and use VCDS to tweak the dash display MPG by a few % to make it accurate again.
