looking to buy second hand octavia wagon

Featured Replies

hey hey,

got referred here from whirlpool forum.

On the hunt for a wagon with a budget of $10k-$20k max.

Wanting the kms under 100,000 and prefer a manual but realise they're pretty hard to find.

And preferably 2014 or newer.

Had suggestions from users on whirlpool and have narrowed it down to a skoda (or VW). We prefer the look of the skodas as well as the price. Had a look at carsales, gumtree and auto trader and there is a few (we are on the gold coast). Mainly from about $16k upwards. Missed one last week that was going for $14k ono which seems like a bargain.

My main questions are...

-Is $16k -$18k realistically what we should be prepared to pay for something with what were after or, like the bargain mentioned above, should we just wait for another one priced lower?

-A few members on whirlpool mentioned known problems with specific 7speed gearboxes. How do I know what to keep and eye out for?

-We are a family of 3 so don't need 3.0ltr beast etc, would there be a huge difference economy wide between the 1.4 on the basic octavia and 2.0 on the RS models (like the idea of the sportier model but don't know if it's worth the extra)?

-And other than the 3 websites mentioned above is there anywhere else I should look for a second hand skoda?

thanks, feedback appreciated

I'm afraid I cant comment on the price as I'm not familiar with the Aus market.

As far as economy and dsg gearboxes, engine sizes below 2.0 have the dry clutch 7sp, where 2.0 and above have wet clutches with either 6 or 7sp depending on age/model.  Wet may be better in the warmer weather you have.  People have said that the 1.4 is similar in performance in economy to the 2.0tdi so is a good option but comes with the dry clutch box which has been reported to have more problems than the wet clutch box.

Another thing to think about is the rear suspension.  Engine powers over 150 have multi link rear end which is much better than the torsion beam of the lower models with the exeption of the 1.6tdi 4x4 which has the multi link setup for the 4x4 system.

TLDR:

In your case you are asking about the 1.4 or 2.0rs.  The rs has the multi link rear but the 1.4 is better on fuel.  you'll need to ask what your priorities are.

Ok thanks. Priority is money at the end of the day and from what I've seen for our budget we'll have to go for newer 110tsi etc or older rs but not too keen on going older.

Cheers for the info about the gearboxes. So going from what you've said it may be the 1.4 with 7speed thats a bit iffy?

If dsg then the 1.4 has the 7sp dry clutch.  Do your home work and get a newer one as i'm sure they tweaked them to be more reliable.

Manuals are all regular clutches in various speeds but nothing out of the ordinary.
