Hey all,

Had 30 miles range on the cars display, and filled up til the pump clicked off. Total diesel dispensed (so it says) 48.87L, which seems a bit much considering the range left. Refuel quantity said 45L.

 

Can we believe the range on the car, or am I to suspect the diesel pump is slightly underreading (ASDA)?

The refuel quantity  in Maxi Dot only displays in 5 ltr increments 

A more accurate gauge to know how much fuel you have left in the tank is when the needle reaches the red segment there is approximately 5 litres left which gives my petrol Octy about 50 miles range left.

Doubt the fuel pump would underread. They'd sooner be overreading and out to scam you out of more money.

 

Fuel tank capacity is 50 litres, plus the length of the pipe from the tank to the filler cap and the plumbing from the tank into the engine. An extra litre if that.

 

The most I've ever put into the car is 48 litres, which is the usual amount I have to refill up with. The car is reckoning about 20 - 30 miles until empty, which calculated is thereabouts right. I've recalibrated the MPG with VCDS and it's now within 2% accuracy, so I can be confident with what the 'distance to empty' really is. Before I rejigged it, it was out by 13%.

 

As said above, take the refill quantity with a pinch of salt. I've never seen it go above 45 litres.

I've managed to get 50.38 litres in at one fill up, I had driven quite some way past 0 range though

Same! A couple of weeks ago I completely forgot to fill up! Saw the light come on but i was busy talking on the phone. Looked down and it was right at the bottom with zero miles left! I got 50.3 litres in! I suspect i was on fumes! Very lucky in my diesel!

The manual says that the light comes on when there are 7 litres left, which my refills approximately agree with, but I don't think it's as accurate as my Mk1 Focus. The range indication says 0 when there are still at least a couple of litres left and I don't usually look at it.

Does the 4x4 have a bigger tank? I regularly get 55 litres in...

Yes 4 x 4 Karoq's and Octavia's have 55 litre tanks.

Hypothetically, if the fuel tank needed replacing would the larger tank fit in a fwd car?  Assuming its to do with the rear suspension?

The 5/2015 manual I've got doesn't say that nor the manual in the MySkoda app 😁 that'll be what's caused the confusion!

2017, so for a facelift car but I did assume they didn't change tank sizes...

Been conducting an experiment with standard 95 octane BP fuel over the last 25 days and the results are quite surprising to me. Last tank 443 miles with 40 miles range left and only able to fill with 45.39 litres, which is a tank average of 44.39mpg. Over this period a total of 125.87 litres used (27.69 gallons) at an average of 42.72mpg which is a 5% improvement on my Shell V-Power 99 octane regular fuel choice. Conclusion is I must be driving slower due to less power available on the cheaper fuel (15 pence per litre cheaper).

An alternative conclusion might be that the energy density of the lower octane fuel may be higher. This is hard for some to understand, but octane rating is not related to the energy content of the fuel, just the way it resists pre-ignition. If the octane rating is boosted by the addition of ethanol, for example, this has a much lower energy density than petrol, so you can end up with a fuel that has lower energy content, for more money. 

On the other point, it is illegal (weights and measures law) for any fuel pump to dispense less than the stated quantity. If you're ever at a filling station and see someone with a polished stainless steel 5 gallon container with a sight glass set into it they're checking the pump calibration.

You're starting to drive like a grandad.

Should have mentioned covered 1,183 miles since 02/09/2019 and this has been with my alternative 7.5J x 18" alloys and 225/40R18 P Zero tyres fitted which will help drag compared to my summer 19" x 8.5J alloys and 235/35R19 Michelin PS4S tyres.
