Engine issues help, looking for similar problems.

Featured Replies

Hello all. Hope this is the right place to enquire I have a mark 2 fabia vrs cave engine. Recently been having a few problems and no idea what's up. Ideally looking for any advice from people who have an idea what may be the issue or have had it themselves.

So on the motorway the throttle is really jerky when around 60-70 and I'm lightly pressing to keep speed. By jerky it's like lots of little jerks forwards as if going over rocky terrain but with it pulling.

I've also had the exhaust light come on and off flashing occasionally when it's refused to give me any power for a few seconds.

Lastly I had it light up with the ECM or whatever the three words are light come on and presumably a very low power limp mode. When I next turned to car on everything seemed fine bar the motorway jittering.

I'll get it into a garage when I can

And also wanted to check is residue of white drops on the exhaust catalytic converter area anything in particular aswell as quite a bit of black build up on the tips (not sure if this is just Normal exhaust stuff)

Thanks for all your time

Lew

First things first service history. When was the last time your spark plugs were changed? What are they?

Dont worry about the soot on the exhaust tips, it’s perfectly normal. I clean mine and they go black within 2 weeks.

if you haven’t already it’s worth picking yourself a cheap ELM127 (I think they’re called) OBD tool off eBay and getting Carista to do the basics like scanning your car. Saves you paying the stealer prices for just scanning.

okay thanks, i'll try and get of of the obd tools and see what it says, i'm also going to change the spark plugs and top up the oil which is a bit low until i can get the filter and fresh oil done

Cheers

Check spark plugs, maybe misfiring, common issue

Hi guys just a quick update, managed to change spark plugs myself, not gonna lie being my first car never done it before but glad i managed to sort it myself, its the sort of skills i should have anyway as its not the hardest of things to do.

the odb reader was a great shout i now do not have any misfire readings on any of the cylinders but i still have a couple of error codes coming up just wondering if anyone recognises them, and should i put a new post up with them or will people see it on this post.

P0113 intake air temperature high voltage/ high input

P0108 manifold absolute pressure map sensor, barometric pressure sensor high input .

i can clear the warning light for a short while but usually on the next starting of the car the next day the light comes back on, only thing i can feel vs what i think is normal is the car being juddery on a cold start.

thanks again for all your help, hoping this is something i can sort out and would not lead to any further problems

also ended up topping up the oil by 1 litre we'll see how quickly it runs down, im happy to top it up occasionally for the time being.

Hi, please can I ask which ODB reader you got and where from?  I'm having almost identical issues with my 63 reg elegance...

you can get ones with basic screens built in but i went for a wifi one that you can get good apps for, you can get it a bit cheaper on ebay but i got one from eurocar parts for around 20 quid. its a streetwize one. was a good shout from one of the gents above

Thanks Lew145

P0108 is your MAP sensor. If you fire the ol’ Google up and put that code in with ‘Ross tech’ at the end it’ll answer what you want to know.

when changing your spark plugs did you make sure the pipe that goes under the air intake was sealed over the rubber seal? You have to remove a block on top of the head to get to the far left spark plug, on that block there’s a pipe that you have to guide under the air intake and over a rubber seal, that could be your problem as P0108 could be a leak on the air intake. It’s easily missed, even the dealerships have forgotten about it in the past.

Thanks i'll have another look at that area, when doing the far left one i managed to get it out with some difficulty without removing the main tube covering it. bit of a pain not knowing whats causing these error codes though. just a random question does it being juddery in park on a cold start and until it warms up a bit mean anything or just a characteristic of the engine while cold?

What spark plugs did you go for? Make sure they’re the correct ones.

I guess it depends on how much of a judder it has, mine does but that’s only because I’ve got a powerflex bush in the dogbone mount.

I made sure to get the correctly spaced Bosch ones and there was a noticeable improvement when I put them in. Just a bit flumuxed what to look for in the p113 and p08 fault codes.

Bosch? The ones you’re wanting for your car should be either NGK or Denso not Bosch. So once again which spark plugs did you buy?

Im fairly sure I’ve had that fault before and it turned out to be a single broken wire to the map sensor.

Okay thanks for the info. The ones I've got were fully compatible. And have been fine, I'm still worried a bit that the 108 and the 113 warnings are not just a wire fault but I'll definitely bear it in mind to look at.

Also wanted to ask if anyone has had any luck with removing noise dampening foam from some of the casing in terms of keeping the supercharger cooler etc. The thread I've found didn't have any definitive answers.
