Winter tyre?

Featured Replies

I have 225/45/19 92w summer tyres currently on my karoq 2.0 tdi 4x4. I want to get some winters on the current 19”alloys. Im looking at the vredstein wintrac pro (SUV focus) or the Goodyear ultragrip performance + (Car focus). Any advice on if car focussed tyres would be ok on the karoq. Both tyres correct size and load. The Goodyears seem to getter better reviews?

Fitting and removing winter/ summer  tyres every 5-6 months increases the likelihood of your alloys being damaged by tyre fitter.  If you don’t get much snow 4 season/ crossclimate tyres might be a better choice as once fitted they work all year round. Another choice is to get some smaller steel or alloy wheels fitted with winter tyres, which gives you the benefit of having the correct tyres for winter and your summer tyres/ alloys can be nicely stored somewhere safe away from all the salt and potential sliding into kerb damage etc.

I managed to get an unused set of 19" Sirius wheels when I first got my Karoq. For Winter I run them with Nokian WR A4 225/45/R19, so they'll be going on in the next few weeks. Found the best price for them on the Oponeo Tyres website, had them delivered to my local tyre fitters who then fitted them. Even though they're Winter tyres they are considerably quieter, and feel much better on the road than the original Bridgestone Duellers the car came with.

I live in Bulgaria, where winters are quite harsh with plenty of snow. I just ordered Nokian WR D4 tyres (225/55/17), I had the same ones on my previous car and I've never had any issues (it was a FWD Octavia). Would definitely recommend Nokian.

I went for the same WR D4 Nokians, albeit on 16" rims.

First Nokians for me, so I'm glad to read this.

I’ve just ordered some all-season Vredestein Quatrac Pro tyres for my wife’s Karoq 1.5 SE-L with 18” Braga wheels. Her car doesn’t do many miles. Her old car had separate winter tyres, but I got fed up messing around changing the tyres every 6 months, and trying to find enough storage space for them in my garage. So I thought I’d give all-season tyres a try this time. The Quatrac Pro is Vredestein’s latest all-season tyre and supposedly has slightly better performance than the previous version, which already scored very highly in reviews.

Finally ordered the Vredstein quatrac pro  Hopefully a good balance of both summer and winter tyres. Less hassle having to swop every year. £124 A corner and £60 cashback from camskills. Will update in a few months on performance

That would be great to hear how they go. Mine will need changing and I will be looking for a 4 season tyre in case winter gets a bit tough.

Just noticed that Michelin X Climates are now available from Mytyres and BlackCircles in 215/50 R18 size, to fit my Karoq, but soon lost interest when I saw the ‘inflated ‘price of around £260 each, fitted I think.

£265.30 @BlackCircles fitted.

Crazy.

I was £165.00 each for 265/65 R 18's from BlackCircles fitted at ATS Euromaster.

When we take delivery of my wife's new Karoq 190 TDI SE L later this month, I'll be fitting the Audi Q3 17" alloys with 215/60x17 Dunlop D5 Winter Sport that we had on her Mk1 Tiguan 184 TDI.

We've run the D4 Winter Sport on previous Tiguans on 16" aftermarket alloys.  I much prefer having a smaller rim and higher profile tyre for winter use.  In fact having run Tiguans on 16", 17", 18" and 19" wheels I concluded that

17's are the sweet spot in terms of a compromise of ride, handling, steering and roadholding.  We've only had a brief test drive in a lower spec Karoq so far but it's clear that the MQB platform is much more able on the road. It'll be

interesting to see if my views about 17" wheels remain the same.

On either 16's with D4 Winter Sport or 17's with D5's. I found that our 4Motion Tiguans were pretty much unstoppable in 6" of snow where other vehicles were abandoned at the side of the road or lying nose down in ditches.

I bought the Audi Q3 alloys second hand with very lightly used Pirelli Sottozero winters on them and they were much less impressive.

Speaking about winter tires I made weird mistake...went to fit winter tires and somehow i gave the information to dealer that i need 225/50/17 tires  they should be 225/55/ 17.) As i sad its 2.tdi 4x4 Karoq...what are the consequnces or to simplify....can i drive with those tires or i have to find solution to change them?

So they already fitted new tyres to new wheels?

If it was a Skoda dealer - they should have known

If it was AM dealer and you have not driven on them - maybe... they would change for a fee...

You can probably drive on them - but they are at the limit - which is 3% - also they will lower car by 10mm too.. so reduce ground clearance in snow..

Yeah...theyre fitted already Triton alloys,  Asked them later (it was

my mistake when i said 50 instead 55 -really dunno how i did this-but still, they should’ve known better).  they said except lowering the car everything else would be fine.

You best use GPS or roadside digital signs to know what your speed actually is compared to the speedo,

the table shows high your speed mught differe to the speedo for the OEM tyre size, but it already showed you were going faster than you actually were,

now it is likely even more inacurate.

Have you reset the TPMS since the tyres were fitted, or reset the pressures they put in and then reset the TPMS?

Edited by Roottootemoot

Everything is done by them (dealershio). No messages regarding pressure (its quiet sensitive system as i heard). When driving, car feels even better. Tomow going for a longer trip so we will see. Regarding speedo...as long it shows higher than actual speed, its good because theyre gone crazy here with speed cameras (stationary and mobile systems).

Best not trust your life and nearest and dearest to a tyre pressure someone else selects.

The TPMS notices a difference in the rotatations of a tyre compared to previous settings, because the TPMS does not notice that differebt tyres are on does not mean they are at the same pressure as before.

If you are happy with the pressures all 4 are at then just reset the TPMS.  As it is the Owners hand book tells you what to do and to do checks.

I know how to set tpms and everything..im just stunned how i was been “thick” when said which tires...😂

I decided to go for all seasons and finally had these fitted just 2 days ago. Had them about 6 weeks but have been waiting to have the 4 wheel alignment done.

Let us know how you get on with the new tyres in day to day driving, compared to the awful Bridgestones I presume you have.
