Squeaky serpentine belt in morning

Featured Replies

Hello all!

It's getting colder and wetter here, and every morning my belt seems to be slipping, I would tighten it, however it has an auto-tensioner, it only seems to squeak after being left, presumably meaning the battery is being charged and putting strain on the belt, is there anyway to tell if the belt is misaligned, I see that the bottom largest pulley near the bottom of the engine seems to be moving quite a lot, not sure if it's a bearing or the belts the belt isn't worn as is fairly new.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Sam

How old is the belt?

Which engine does your car have?

The most likely culprit is the tensioner idler pulley bearing.

In what way?

I would take the belt off and have a feel at the bearings in the tensioner and the alternator as well just to make sure everything is good.

Diagnostic dice and crystal ball at the ready.....

It is a 1.2 HTP with just over 100k miles

It doesn't spin evenly, as it shakes as if the bearings are shot

Ok will do, anything I need to remove before loosening the belt?

Being a 1.2 make sure the belt is on the right way. There are two possible ways to route it and the wrong way leads to squeaking as it doesn’t pull around the alternator correctly.

Some piccies showing the correct routing without and with A/C:

And the way you can get it wrong is coming straight down from the alternator pulley and around the a/c compressor. It fits but because of the limited surface contact with the alternator pulley under load it slips
