That Magnatec oil is VW 502 00/ 505 00

Where did you see that, is it on the bottle? When I look up that oil (with A5 on bottle as per pic in Aldi link) I see no VW specs?

The A3/B4 version is 502/505 though.  All versions detailed here: https://www.castrol.com/en_gb/united-kingdom/home/car-engine-oil-and-fluids/engine-oils/engine-oil-brands/castrol-magnatec-brand/castrol-magnatec-stop-start.html#tab_5w-30-a3-b4

502 00 and 505 00 are not the longlife grades, those are 504 00 and 507 00.

the green bottle isn't longlife but the gold one is... spoke to the service manager all we were told was to buy 5w30 and that is all it says on our invoice too, nothing about any other letters or numbers on it.  I am finding Skoda more and more frustrating by the day, it doesn't even state in my version of the online manual which oil you should use just call an oil specialist company.

It is 5w 30,

but to VW 504 / 507 spec.  So 5w 30 Full Synthetic III  (Long Life.)

No idea why anyone expects full time workers at VW Group Main Dealerships to know,

especially receptionists, salespeople,  but Sales / Parts desks and Techs / Fitters should.

Sometimes the 'Courtesy Transport Driver' or the Cleaner are better informed, they might be car enthusiasts and meet people and overhear the tales of the hopeless staff.

I am sorry to say that responses like this are so common on this forum that it is a reason why I personally will not buy a Skoda; husband is happy with his Karoq as a car but we've been back to the dealership with faults several times since we've had it not as dangerous as I know some of you have had but it makes me so concerned that I won't be encouraging him to keep it long term I think more things will go wrong that will cost too much to fix, maybe that's modern cars but other manufacturers don't seem to have the record of faults and we've never had it on our other cars so early on in ownership.  I think 4 faults in 18 months is 4 too many.

What you do with them if they are useless is tell them it is your money, you and others safety and if they know nothing about the product they sell and expect others to pay for go get the manager to find someone that does.

If that displeases them then tough really.

As mentioned above, My 1.5 MY19 needed some more oil.  On the basis that it is filled with long life oil and set to variable servicing in the factory, I searched for VW 508 spec oil which seems to be the recommended version for variable servicing.  This is 0w-20 and quite difficult to find.  Halford sell a Mobil 1 version but only on line.  ( I had a look in a fairly large Halfords store.) Amazon sell the Castrol version.  Both came out at about £19 for litre bottle delivered. Amazon sent it from a warehouse in Germany.  I am not sure if this is the right thing to do and maybe I overspecc'd the oil.

This is the item that I bought https://www.amazon.co.uk/Castrol-15A54C-Edge-Professional-0w-20/dp/B071D8TLV4/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=vw+508+oil&qid=1573673319&sr=8-3  Frustratingly, about £2 cheaper now than when I placed my order last week.

Had a look online at the online manual and read this:-

Engine oil Specification

To find out which type of engine oil you can use for your vehicle, contact a specialist garage. If this oil is not available, other oils can also be refilled. To prevent engine damage, a maximum of 0.5 l of engine oil with the following specifications may be used until the next oil change:
▶ Petrol engines: VW 504 00, VW 502 00, VW 508 00, ACEA A3/ACEA B4 or API SN, (API SM);

▶ Diesel engines: VW 507 00, ACEA C3 or API CJ-4. Engine oil VW 505 01 can optionally be used in diesel engines without a diesel particulate filter.

@Teds

Purchased the same Castrol 0w-20 oil from Opie Oils less than an hour ago and have just received an email to say the order has been checked and sent (Royal Mail) now that is some service I must say.

The oil cost £11.95 for 1 litre and there was a 15% discount for the/my first order which meant that the total payment including delivery was £13.66p

Make sure you're only topping up with 0W20 if the car hasn't yet had its first service. No Skoda main dealer I know stocks VW 508.00 (0W20).

They all use VW 507.00 (5W30).

There is a reason VW 508.00 is so hard to find, very few use it.

Once it's been serviced then just buy this, VAG's own branded oil that meets all current specs...

£4.80 per litre, delivered direct to your door from a Skoda main dealer in Scotland.

Thanks silver 1011 for that, I had a look at the Quantum website and there is quite a choice of oils depending on fixed or extended service/oil change mileage.

Anyone know if the VW 508 00 spec engine oil is better for the petrol/gasoline particulate filter fitted to MY2019 vehicles?

It will not be better for your engine or GPF. it was better for VW Group as it helped them get WLTP / RDE & now RDE2 figures.

Time will tell just how good it is, but then not all VW Group Dealerships are using it at services.

There are those still servicing TSI's with VW504. /507

As above, the only reason Skoda use the thinner VW 508.00 at the factory is to achieve the emissions values they need.

Once out on the road with owners the thicker VW 507.00 offers the best engine and turbo protection.

Just taken a look at the 1L bottle of oil that came with my Karoq; it is .....

Shell Helix Ultra professional 0W-30 for diesel and gasoline engines.

AV-L.  Fully synthetic motor oil.

VW 504.00/507.00

The label on the back says ACEA C3, VW 504.00/507.00

It also says 'Shelf life: 4 years from the date of manufacture if kept covered, stored in a dry place and protected from heat.' I had never considered that engine oil might have a storage life.

This is the cheapest that I've seen it .....

Thanks very much for that list, Apprentice, it is reassuring to see that petrol/diesel engines are covered by the 504.00/507.00 specs stated on the Shell Helix oil that I mentioned a few posts ago. At 8,000 miles, I haven't had to break into that bottle yet but I wouldn't see any reason not to replace it ,when the time comes, with exactly the same Shell Helix.

They all leave the Factory other than the ICE Citigo on Variable Servicing with Long Life Oil.

Since 2018 Skoda has VW 508 / 509 spec oil in cars coming to the UK.

Long story short.

'Use the correct oil for the engine and the service regime.

For a TDI on Fixed or Variable servicing it is the VW507 or VW 509 .   VW 507 is fine.

On a TSI it can be VW502, 504 or 508 for Fixed Servicing,

& for variable it must be to VW 504 or 508.    VW504 is just fine when doing an oil / filter change.

This has got to be the most confusing thread I have read on this forum!

Think yourself lucky, rather than reading this thread you could have tried asking someone in a Skoda dealer.

So, back to the BLIS bit of this double thread..  my Karoq went in to my dealers in Grimsby to get hooked up to the diagnostics kit. Absolutely nothing showing up on their box of tricks, so they are ordering the two modules which control the BLIS system. Apparently, although neither side works, both rear corner units then link up to another module somewhere behind the dash. I was told that they want the car for two days but they won't have a loan car for two consecutive days (which fits in with my work) until mid December.

Not quite sure why they didn't try reloading the software but I guess they just follow procedures. Fortunately it's not a critical item that has gone u/s but it doesn't bode well for keeping the car for several years, as I usually try to get at least eight years out of them - there again that's probably the case with any modern car full of electronic gizmo's.

Did they not say anything about a software update? Did you mention it to them? Could be a lot easier than having your dashboard out etc. We aren’t ones for changing cars every 3 years but like you wondering what the long term cost is of having all the electronics. If they can’t fit you in until Dec suggest the software update, keep the Dec date in their diary, surely its worth a try. 🙁

I did mention doing a software update to them and the fact that I'd come across this on this forum (I found an identical situation in the Superb 3 section on here), but unfortunately dealers have their own way of doing things and getting them to deviate from that is virtually impossible. That's why I avoid main dealers at all cost unless it's a warranty job, favouring my local Audi/VW/Skoda specialist garage which I've used for years.

Fortunately I did see the whole diagnostic check being done, as my dash cam was running the whole time as they left the engine running throughout, otherwise I would have been very sceptical about what had actually been done.
