MK4 Octavia, getting tempted..?

Featured Replies

Well my Mk3 1.4 TSI 140 Elegance will be 5 next March and has done less than 20k, apart from being now on it's 4th yes 4th Turbo Activator Link/Rod due to seizing it has been very reliable. However I am getting tempted by the latest incarnation as shown here:

https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2020-skoda-octavia-ups-ante-plug-hybrid-and-more-tech.

Seems to have more variants and being aimed at the higher end market, I would fancy a 2L with 190bhp have to be petrol due to my low yearly mileage, had all sorts of DPF problems with my last Passat hence change to petrol.

Might give we buy/steal any car.com a try to get an idea but will probably sell private, it has added Park Assist and ACC which is worth every penny. Still has Skoda all component warranty.

There are times I'm glad I got what I did when I did, this is one of them. I liked the look of the MK3 as I did the MK1 and the pre-FL MK2 and that is the main reason I bought it over some other things. It is specc'd far higher than I need and it fits it's purpose very well.

I had high hopes for the MK4 as I don't tend to like facelifts in general and the 3.5 was (and still is) no exception. But no, the mk4 doesn't do it for me.

I'll be keeping this one for a bit to come yet and that's no bad thing really.

It would be nice if they would show a more basic mk4 as the ones I've seen so far are probably £35k territory.   Look like L&K with options.

Didn't intend it to hijack the Mk3 thread, just wondering what those with Mk3's thought about updating to Mk4's. In many ways  I  agree with flybynite above, my Mk3 has been excellent and enjoyed it nearly as much as my E39 and E61 5 Series both remapped 3L straight 6 diesel lumps, they floated along whereas the Octy is a bit rougher ride wise. The 1.4 is great just runs out of puff a bit too soon but for a 1.4 it's quick enough. FL versions have never appealed to me neither one thing or another. Not New and not Old.

My Octy has never suffered from cabin boom, never really noticed any wind noise to speak of, would have preferred IRS but the ride is not uncomfortable just not as smooth as my 5's but quite okay. Service charges for the 5's were eye watering but I didn't have to pay them! Now I do!

Next change for me will be to fully electric car.

Maybe that will come at some stage of the mk4’s life, until then I’ll stick with my mk3.

Tried mine in wbac, £6500 (64 plate, SE, 60,000 miles), so I guess yours must be £8k ish ?

Wont be the car for me. Looks great, will probably be pricey though.

2 main reasons why I wont be investing...

1. My 'local' skoda dealer is now a 140 mile round trip away

2. Buying the first cars of a new generation is a risk not worth taking. At best you end up driving a car that will be improved in a couple of years, at worst you end up the paid up beta tester for all the niggles and problems a brand new car brings about.

Been there with the mk3 Leon, never again!

Keep the MK3.

It's 5 years old and only done 20k.  It'll be worth, what, about 40%, of its purchase price and it's only just run in.

You'd have to pay a lot of money to essentially just get a sightly more shiny car which you'll be used to in 2 weeks, the novelty will be gone and going through the massive depreciation phase again with no tangible benefit.

Unless it's not ticking boxes you really need I can't see the point in getting rid of a perfectly good, very low miles car that'll last another decade easy.

Nearly 34K on my Mk3 with no issues of concern. Going to need 4 new tyres soon and have a service plan so no intention of getting a replacement right now. The car does everything I need so why get rid off?

You are so right, as it's the Elegance I chose and then added the PA and ACC the only item missing I would like is the rear view camera, and a little more 'umph', probably  with a re-map as the DT box it seems cannot be easily removed as with the diesel engine.

Think I will stay with what I have...

Thanks for the comments guys.

Rear cam is a sub £20 upgrade and a remap is a few hundred. For what it’s worth, I’m unlikely to buy a Mk4 as I am still loving my Mk3 2 years in and I intend to keep it at least another couple of years. The next car will probably be totally different as my OH has just got a new car she really likes and I want to go back to our caravan days so a bigger car that’s not lowered (something like a Range Rover, Levante or Cayenne) will likely be next. Mk4 is likely to be around for the next 6 years (3 years as is and 3 years with a facelift) so plenty of time to get used to it and see how it feels.

Tempted by the mk4 estate alright but not for another couple of years, might pick up a year or two old one then.

Was never a fan of the floating tablet like screens on modern cars and maybe it's my age showing but trying to increase the aircon temperature on that screen looks very fiddly, can do it without looking with the big dial in the mk3 :)

Your comments are appreciated ☺️. I am sure to get a call from my dealer when the Mk4 does arrive but reckon he will be disappointed.

I can buy the camera no problem, its connecting the wires and threading them through to the back I am not looking forward to...

I must agree with 'Iway', much prefer actual dials and knobs you do not have to hunt for on a screen is my preference. Things have got so much more complicated since my 1934 Austin 10, cable brakes, maybe wipers or maybe not if you went too fast, no syncro on 1st or 2nd, friction shocks and it never broke down while I had it. Went through France, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Belgium without a problem.
