Early tyre wear

If tyre pressures can be ruled out, then poor anticipation resulting in excessive braking and acceleration is the main reason for premature tyre wear.

She has always had a heavy right foot.. but still on a 4x4 it should not be possible to wheel spin..

I disagree, its not real. 4x4, most power is still going to the front so the fronts will spin.

Haldex 2 - yes.

Haldex 5 - no.

I don't know what the 2018 superb I test drove had, it was the 280 petrol.  At a couple of junctions the fronts were definitely spinning....

2018 Superb has Haldex 5. At greater angles of steering wheel you can experience some slip, but this is not a spin. Allowance for Haldex 5 is 20 cm (centimeters) of slip of the wheel.

280 can easily spin all 4 wheels at certain circumastances. No problem for my 292 PS Kodiaq on slightly wet road.

Attached a picture of front tyre

Assuming that is a picture of a N-S-F, ( Left side in New Zealand ) tyre then the feathering on the tyre indicates an alignment problem as well as low tyre pressure.

Thanks AG Falco

Some Better Photos

I also checked the pressure on these 2 and they were both at 2.58 bar and 2.57 bar.

Outer Measurements are 10mm from where tread should end (approx)

So you drive in large multi story car parks at all ?

No ....  no Multi Storey...

Definitely got a problem then , have you had tracking checked ?

No - but wearing on inside and outside can not really be tracking... its normally one of the other...

I guess car / tyre combo needs to run at high pressures than recommended...

Will see...

2.6 bar is already a much higher pressure than I run on our Kodiaq without any issue. 19” wheels on ours, and it’s a pretty heavy car (190 diesel, DSG, 4x4, pano roof, usually driven fully laden).

Are you checking cold or hot ?

Me - cold..

So will be running even higher pressure so somethings not right

Stupid question but have you checked with a different gauge incase faulty

I have a Digital gauge on my Inflator and a digital gauge that I check with - read same pressure

Plus I use same 2 tools on my motorbikes and there - I have digital sensors and read out also on each wheel also - and they all tie up within 0.1 bar (1.4 PSI)

So fairly sure all is OK - as 4 different things read the same..

The gauge and inflator.

Very strange maybe a trip to the dealership never seen it before apart from track days

  • 6 months later...

For information, our Kodiak is in for its third service today, at 55k miles. Front tyres are now down to 4mm and rear tyres are showing 4.8mm left. It's running Scorpion Verdes. I don't think that's bad for a reasonably heavy 4x4 car.

As an aside, will they be sanitising the car before and after the service and will they charge for it ?

They're taking it pretty seriously. The showroom is impressively "distanced"; I was given a sanitised pen to sign documentation with that then went into the box of "pens to be sanitised". In terms of what they do with sanitising the car - I've brought my own wipes and alcohol gel with me and will assume the contact points in the car are not clean even if they tell me they have cleaned them - better to be safe than sorry.

Good attitude, I don't need my car much at present, so once it was back on the drive I was just going to leave it there untouched for a few days.

Did they charge you for the cleaning service though ???

No charge for cleaning.
