Skoda Citigo rattling noise from transmission

Featured Replies

Hi! Bought Skoda Citigo yesterday. It was delivered to me and didn't really drive it since I have no tax or insurance sorted, until this morning. When I turned on the engine, heard loud rattling noise when the car is idle, but disappears when I depress the clutch. I can't hear it when I drive it,either. Asked a mechanic who is my neighbour to listen to it but he said he never fixed this specific model before and 3 cylinder cars are usually noisy but he said the sound is worrying. Tried to contact the dealer, but they are not returning my calls or emails. Is this noise normal for this car or do I have a problem? It's only 2017 but already 90000 km on the clock...

That's a lot of annual mileage for a car that size.

The rattle I'd suspect to be coming from the clutch assembly. I can't advise further because I don't know which consumer laws apply...

Most likely transmission. It is characteristics for earlier models but I thought it was sorted at least for 2017 model.

I know I have a problem with stealership if they're not responding 😜. The car was meant to be well maintained and fully serviced,I saw the report, not that I really trust dealers, but I won't be doing long journeys, that's why I got the car despite it's mileage... Could've been a huge mistake,it turns out.

Would it be clutch release bearing?

Mine does it, mainly when cold. Start up - rattle, rattle - depress clutch - silence. Done it since I had it. I believe it is common to these cars and is a gearbox issue, nothing to do with the clutch. Just a simple gearbox design, made for a price...

I don't notice it once it has warmed up.

How long have you had this car for?

If it is clutch release bearing, would you replace the clutch too? What happens if you don't?

Well, the labour in getting a garage to drop the gearbox is more than the price of a clutch assembly (parts)...

I have owned the car for 2 1/2 years, and it is nearly five years old.

I would agree with Ken, no point in getting the gearbox out of a car with your mileage and not changing the clutch. Change everything in there and be done with it.

Well, we're talking about dealership fixing the problem, I'm sure they will do minimum required

I find it hard to believe it is anything in the clutch. Release bearings would be noisy when you press the pedal.

Our 2017 up! gearbox is not silent either but quieter than 2015 Citigo.

Hopefully it's just a noisy transmission. I just had someone listen to it from the outside when I was driving in first. The noise is there but not as loud( I suppose the engine noise muffles the sound from transmission), but it's def gone when clutch is depressed.

Yes, because gearbox stops spinning when you depress the clutch.

Could it be a gearbox issue? Like gearbox bearings wearing off? Would the car make the same noise? The gearbox design in Skoda Citigo wasn't great after all...

Normal for Citigo. If noise stops when clutch pedal pressed, don't worry.

That's exactly what I would have said if it was less driven or older than 2017. Not knowing how it was used and how loud rattling is we can't be sure it is normal.

I have a 66 plate Monte Carlo and mine does the same when cold, once driven for 5 minutes no sound at all. I’ve been told it’s a characteristic of this engine.

"characteristic of this engine"

More likely gearbox.

Daughters Citigo does exactly the same thing, Had it since April 2017 and done about 15k since then. Hers is a 2013 model, I wouldn't worry about it personally.

Assuming it is most likely a noisy idler shaft, it might be worth checking for any small oil leaks from possibly worn gearbox oil seals, and the quality and level of the gearbox oil. Maybe just flush and change it anyway - 90K is a fair mileage, whether or not the manufacturer claims the the g/b oil never needs changing.

I know the gearbox oil wasn't changed recently, saw the service report, but yeah,it may be worth doing...

So the dealer took the car back and I'm told the clutch release bearing is a bit loose and makes vibrating noise. Therefore clutch will be replaced. Although I'm happy about getting new clutch,I'm not convinced by this explanation somewhat... I thought the bearing was meant to be loose...?

Please just remember tell here what they did after all. At least I would like to know.

It would be handy if it's the clutch and not the g/b.  I've never had a rattle on a clutch, but I have had a loud 'shriek' when operating the clutch, which was the thrust race.
