Spare Wheel advice

Featured Replies

Hi,

After some advice please. I’m after a spare wheel, preferably full-size but space saver would be OK.
I have 235/40 r19 wheels and wondered if pretty much any VAG group wheels will fit with the same centre hole size?

I’ve found a VW transporter wheel that has a 205/65 r16 tyre on it.

Here. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/352942383244

....which I think is only 0.3% difference in diameter to my normal wheels/tyre.... according to:-
https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=235-40r19-205-65r16

So what do you guys think?  is there anything I haven’t thought of?  Will it fit?  I know it will look crap but I don’t care about that as long as it gets me home!

Thanks!

I don't think that they have the same stud pattern.

Thanks for all the help guys, appreciate it.

I posted this in a separate thread a couple of weeks ago -

For anyone contemplating replacing the "tyre repair kit" with a spacesaver spare wheel here's my recommendation based upon my recent experience -

1. First ask on here if anyone has one for sale !! I missed a chance here that would have saved some time and effort.

2. You'll need the spacesaver wheel, a jack and brace kit, and a foam insert to support the floor properly. Skoda dealers will charge around £180 for a 16 inch wheel set and £210 for the 18 inch wheel set. That includes everything you need and the tyre is brand new, unused obviously.

3. If you want to get it cheaper then head over to eBay.  You should be able to find an 18 inch spacesaver wheel (just the wheel and tyre) for around £35. This will be a used item but query the seller and you should be able to determine that it will have plenty of tread for a spare. Note that all the VAG use the same spacesavers so an 18inch wheel for a VW Golf should fit the Superb and so on. The 18inch Superb wheel uses a 125/70 R18 tyre and the rim has the code "1K0601027B" stamped on it (the 16 inch wheel will have a different tyre size and code).

4. You can get the full jack, wheel brace and foam insert kit brand new from Superskoda here Superskoda 18inch or here Superskoda 16inch for around 60 Euros.

That makes the whole kit less than £100.

If you want to beef up the wheel brace with something that has a little more leverage then you'll need a 17mm socket on the end of it.

Don't forget to ensure you have the little plastic "tweezers" thingy to remove the plastic wheel nut covers - that's not included in the Superskoda kit.

And I highly recommend removing all the wheels and putting a touch of copper ease or similar around the inner centre of the wheel where it sits on the hub to prevent the wheel from sticking to the hub due to corrosion.

That's all.

during last two years haven't had to test on road,
original size 205/55r16 cancels Cruise Control, that weren't happiest trip -

~80km distance with spare wheels speed limit 80km/h

Some Superbs have bigger discs so need a minimum of a 17 in rim to fit.

The 280/272 at least, not sure about the 220.

So if you have 19's now, check that a 16in rim will fit.

Made the mistake of not specifying one when I purchased the car new . Found it difficult to get a 17” wheel for sensible money . In the end I bought a set of 4 ,  17” alloys with winter tyres already fitted , off a Yeti for just £200 from eBay . Great through the winter and I keep one of the original wheels as the spare . Bought a jack and brace off a Passat for £35 , also off eBay . One way to do it and better value too.

yes, only 272/280 has big brakes -

340mm front and 310mm rear instead others have 310/298,
but that isn't problem for 16" spare wheel,
just install spare on rear axis, that way is more safe for any type of engine

Don't make the mistake i did.  I bought a new space saver, jack and tool kit for my 16 Plate 190 DSG with 17" wheels from a dealer, then i traded the car and the new Superb 150 had a full size spare.  Now tripping over the thing every time i go into the shed.  Still, it looks nice though!!  I haven't checked, but i'm sure it would fit all 16, 17, 18".  MartiniB mentioned about fitting on the rear.  I've seen that in here a few times, always fit the space saver to the rear otherwise it can mess up the ABS and cook the diff, or so i have read.

I did notice when I put the winter tyre wheels on my car , the tyre pressure monitor didn’t like them , kept saying low pressure . It took a few resets before it finally settled down and accepted them .

The main reason is emergency braking, the front wheels do most of it and you want the same effort from each one, imagine when one tyre is twice the width of the other  -  put the space saver on the back.

Would appreciate some advice on a space saver wheel for my Mk3 factory fitted with 17 inch wheels.
Has anyone experience with an aftermarket product like this or similar? Would it fit in an emergency situation?

The stud pattern seems correct but dimensions aren't provided (I've inquired).

It's all rather confusing as the official space saver from Skoda for the Superb which costs £212 is an 18-incher, 125/70 R18 (my car has factory wheels that are 17 inches).

Don't let the fact that is different rim size worry you, the important thing is the overall diameter compared to the other wheels. Well, it is also important in case of fouling steering/suspension/brake components, but I do not think is the case with the sizes considered.

As you can see in the chart below, 125/70R18 has a much smaller outside diameter than the standard 17" tyre size on the Superb MK3. However, Skoda normally supply a 205/55R16 fitted to a 6.5x16 ET46 5/112 57.1 steel rim (from the Octavia MK3) as a spare wheel for the front wheel drive Superb MK3. Like the 125/70R18, the 205/55R16 tyre has an outside diameter that is much smaller than the standard Superb MK3 tyre sizes.

Perhaps look at using a 215/60R15 Karoq wheel, ie. 215/60R16 fitted to a 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim. This should fit in the spare wheel well of a front wheel drive Superb MK3. I expect the 4x4 version would have less room and therefore need a spare saver...although I would look at a 135/80R18 fitted to the standard 3.5Jx18 ET25.5 5/112 57.1 space saver steel rim, rather than the rather small 125/70R18.

Note that a standard Superb MK3 wheel such as 215/60R16 fitted to the standard 6.5Jx16 ET41 5/112 57.1 rim is about 6mm too wide to fit in the spare wheel well without raising the carpet.

The widest inflated tyre that will fit in the spare wheel well of the Superb MK3 is 215mm. Unfortunately, the standard 215/60R16 fitted to its 6.5J rim is about 6mm too wide...at about 221mm...as shown in the chart below.

Outside diameter of tyre

215/55R17 668.3mm

125/70R18 632.2mm (5.4% smaller outside diameter compared to 215/55R17)

Actual width of inflated tyre (measured from sidewall to sidewall at the widest point)

215/60R16 fitted to 6.5J rim 221mm

215/60R16 fitted to 6J rim 215mm

Alcar 6665 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim fitted with Continental UltraContact 215/60R16 95V

Might be asking a really stupid question - i currently have an Octavia vRS (2010) with a spare wheel, but it's being traded in for a 2019 Supeb which doesn't come with the spare wheel.

Would the wheel from my Octavia fit the Superb?

@f1st

it's not dependent on car model/year

when i waited for 2023 Mk3.FL i were well informed it will come with unusable 125/70r18

and i decided made swap with my previous 2016 Mk3 full diameter 205/65r16

but one year later i got surprise, 16" don't fit even on rear axle

because 272/280 Superbs have bigger brakes(340/310) instead all rest (310/298) (front/rear)

now i have 205/60r17 on alloy

list of choices:

@Carlston Thank you. My car is a 2021 Superb IV (Mk3 hybrid) and it doesn't even have a wheel well in the boot (batteries have taken up all the space apparently). Thus, I have to carry my spare wheel secured with bungee ropes within the cargo compartment itself. There's no way I can have full sized spares and will have to make do with small space savers like the 125/70/r18...

Related to this is a post suggesting that brake calipers on some Mk3 Superbs are larger and different to other Mk3s? Is this issue with factory-installed brake calipers or aftermarkets put in by the owners? It would be terrible if such calipers then got in the way of a space saver being fitted during an emergency!

@MartiniB Hello! I found your reply very interesting. I believe my 2021 Mk3 Superb IV is facelifted (FL).
1. Is it true that all Mk3 FLs will have larger brake calipers that render the 125/70/r18 space saver wheels un-usable?
2. Do you know if this is Skoda's official position and how could they supply or sell a space saver that's un-usable?

The spare wheel on the Octavia MK2 VRS needs to be at least 16" to clear the calipers on the front 312x25mm brake discs, so I expect you have a 205/55R16 6.5Jx16 ET50 5/112 57.1 steel spare wheel.

If the Superb MK3 is not a 272HP/280HP 4x4 car, then the 205/55R16 from the Octavia MK2 can be used as a spare because Skoda does sometimes supply a similar (just 4mm different offset, ie. ET50 vs ET46) 205/55R16 6.5Jx16 ET46 5/112 57.1 (from the Octavia MK3) as a spare for the Superb MK3.

The Superb MK3 272HP/280HP 4x4 has 340x30mm front brake discs and 310x22mm rear brake discs, so the spare wheel needs to be at least 17" to clear the brake calipers on both the front and the rear of this car. So an 18" spare saver is actually 1" bigger than is actually required to clear the brake calipers.

  1. two letters "IV" shows it is hybrid, i'm worrying there isn't space for whatever spare wheel, that space can ben ate by battery.

  2. only 2.0TSI 272/280ps 4x4 Mk3+Mk3.FL have bigger brakes and that is reason of 125/70r18

  3. about 125/70r18 is "unusable" is my private opinion, read cons in the link i posted above.

technically it can be used on all models, which aren't hybrids, can't say for sure about IV
