Why not buy a good tyre pressure gauge and regularly check your tyres and pressures,

any TPMS is handy and with run flat tyres let people know a tyre has blown out, but since you knew the tyre blew out do you know if it was low and you never knew because you never checked them, or you ran over something and the tyre was wrecked?

What happened did you run over something?

Or were you running with a slow puncture ior do you not know?

No idea what you mean by works in daily city mode but not on highways.

Every time we drive through the A303 through Somerset the TPMS warning light comes on on our Mk2. I must remember to reset it at the start of those journeys, I almost always never do. It always goes off and we never have a flat which is a little annoying. Makes me nervous until I can stop at side of road or a garage....

We hire cars for summer vacation in europe. France, Italy Spain et al. May of the cars have been Vag marque or Opel.  They almost always produce a tyre flat warning as soon as we start driving, we've never had a flat since driving them last 5 years or more. Bust at least 4 or 5 cars which produced warning lights within 30 min of leaving depot.

Modern tehc is more advanced than the old days, I would not want to go back, but sometimes it is riddled with false positives....and you wonder whether or not it is serving any purpose at all......

They are not giving 'flat tyre warnings' though are they, just that possibly a tyre is not at the same circumference as when the TPMS was set.

Or not set as might well be the case.

Flat tyres are an easy thing, reduced pressures seem to be the issues.

VW Group system is much more a Warning for Run Flat tyres which VW Group are not bin the habit of fitting OEM.

1.
nothing unusual, i started ~180km trip back to home(the same day if midnight not counted)
after ~30km got warning light on Maxdot,
didn't stop cause no gas station on that route
next ~25km gave me blew up tire :(

2.
sorry, my english is too short :(
i mean't when you drive in the city you can visit gas station and check pressure immediately after warning is shown.
on the highway only ACTIVE TPMS can give full picture of situation

VW do the basic system as usually fitted to Skoda's which seems to work on the rolling radius of individual tyres relative to each other, but you can also have a full system which monitors the pressure in each tyre and displays it on the dash on other VW Group vehicles http://en.volkswagen.com/en/innovation-and-technology/technical-glossary/reifenfuelldruck-kontrollsystem.html

How about something like this which connects via Bluetooth to you smart phone https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/products/product-reviews/2015-06/review-fobo-bluetooth-tyre-pressure-monitor/

We have had the ABS based system on 4 cars now (inc the Superb) and it works just fine when you get a loss of pressure, i.e. a light comes on etc,

The wifes Nissan has the valve based system which worked exactly the same when a tyre had a loss of pressure, i.e. the light came on etc.

But give me the ABS system any day. No expensive valves, no expensive receivers. Fitting winter tyres is simple with no additional valves to buy.

Skidpan, I hear you about the winter tyre thing and the pain of Direct TPMS.   I am just about to change one of my cars, which is the one that normally has the winter tyres. The new car (a van derived MPV) has direct TPMS with in-wheel sensors rather than the simpler iTPMS that uses the ABS sensors. The new winter wheels and tyres are likely going to be over £1500 because of this as the sensors are not cheap and they then need coding to the ECU. Second-hand are not an option as the car is new to market so there is nothing available     I still wouldn't be without winter tyres on one of my cars though as I find them very impressive and they have got me out of some really snowy spots in Scotland and the North Pennines over the years.

We bought the winter tyres fitted to steel wheels from MyTyres.com. The total cost for wheels and tyres (Nokian) was about £360, the TPMS valves were an extra £20 a wheel fitted, all in a total of about £440 delivered. With the Nissan we are lucky since the valves are self learning, no dealer visit needed, just fit and drive.

Still prefer the ABS system though.

Give MyTyres a go. https://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/skw.pl?cart_id=29709804.110.50721&dsco=110&sowigan=Wi&csuchen=1&ch_x=1&s_p=

Don't like the later systems with pressure gauges in the tyres.  Wife's Mokka has it and you have no flexibility on tyre pressures, they can be either light load, full load or eco and have to match what the system says they should be for each or you get a warning light on the dash.  You can't run them a little over or under without getting a warning.

I am happy with the ABS system, there are false alarms but all you need to do is pull over where safe and have a look around the car - carry a pressure gauge so you can check them at the side of the road.  One I initially thought was a false alarm on the last Octavia was found the following day to be a stone penetration through the tyre tread - the fitter had never seen anything like it.

If you get a warning check the tyres - it is not just your life you are putting at risk by continuing to drive (highway/motorway or not).

i used to 2.5 in front and 2.4 in rear,
but after have installed Direct TMPS

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/434028-tire-pressure-monitoring-system/

decided increase to 2.7/2.5 because on colder(12°c) mornings that are equal to 2.3/2.2
but after few hours on hot highway(air >30°c; track >40°c; speed >130kmh) pressure increased to 2.9/.2.7

interesting, engine is boiling front right tire when in static,
have got 3.2 and  60°c after three hours waiting on Serbian Hungarian border(1km3h; air 33°c; Sun from the left side)

while other three wheels were 2.8/2.6 and 42°c.

this dangerous situation can't be warned by built in Indirect TMPS

I presume its all wireless, and the main unit is solar powered? Does it have batteries?

@bubib5 @BarneyMike

it charges from solar panel, but original 480mAh weren't enough for winter period -
had to charge it once a week trough Micro USB port
then i soldered bigger capacity one, 1500mAh, and now it's asks for cable three times a year
